Should that have had the word "Spoiler" in the subject line somewhere?

Damn shame. Pity that currently LA has gained the yellow as a result of
another's misfortune :-(

If he had finished with his team LA would still have taken the yellow.
The commentry I heard said his team didn't wait for him so it may not have
effected the wearer of the yellow jersey, but we will never know... not sure
I want to watch the crash tonight!

Nah. Zabriske coming off caused the team to hesitate. That's what cost them
1st place.

Not really. Staying on the bike is always part of the game (a-hem, Alex Zulle...)

And as others have said, Armstrong would have got the jersey anyway.

But not today...

And it's one thing winning when you win, but when you win as a result of
someone else's misfortune, yes, it's a win, but not in the same way.

Yes, the CSC team should have followed protocol and waited for the yellow
jersey like Ullrich and Armstrong have done ;-)

Well, I suspect that you shouldn't read the message if it has TdF: in it.
It's bound to be a spoiler of sorts. I brought this subject up prior to the
race. I first saaid 'Spoiler:', then realised it'd be easier to say 'TdF:'
... if you haven't watched it, don't join in the threads.

The subject must also not contain any references to the spoiler within.

but their real team motive is to get Basso higher up the GC, which they
wouldn't have done had they waited.

Amen.

> If he had finished with his team LA would still have taken the yellow.

Don't agree. The team definitely slowed up and got ragged after he went
down. I think if he hadn't fallen they would probably have at least
equalled Discovery Channel's time. A distraction in the last Km of a
time trial has to cost two seconds.

It was pretty nasty. He was lucky that the rider behind him managed to
miss him, but even so he's going to be hurting like hell tomorrow.

Yeah. Personly I think Armstrong would not have wanted to win that way.
ANd I suspect it will take some of the thrill away for him. It would
for me anyway.

Same thing really. Trying that hard its easy to make a mistake and
everyone does. Just unlucky to not get away with it.

Yeah, but I'm sure he won't lose any sleep over it. It's a racing thing.

LA mantioned the concentration could have been a factor. I've never ridden
in a peleton/time trial and am sure that you have to remain in control.
Especially when in the sprint to the end. You wouldn't want to head butt
someone, would you?!

May be LA would have already been in yellow if he didn't have the misfortune
of his foot coming unclipped in the first stage? Ifs and buts don't win
races!

Was it misfortune or a mistake? I bet if the situation was reversed and LA
fell it would have been described as a mistake, it happens to someone else
and LA profits from it and it is called misfortune. Seems everyone hates a
winner!

I was a general remark not addressed specifically to you, perhaps I'll
change "everyone hates" to "some people hate". I presume that you don't
disagree with the preceeding statement regarding mistakes and misfortune
since you didn't comment on that?

However the fall was described as a "misfortune" by you, rather than a
mistake - which seems to me like the implied meaning is that he was just
plain unlucky he fell and there was nothing he or his team could have done
to prevent it? This does not seem to be the case to me, the mistake was
avoidable, however that may have meant not taking so many risks and ending
up with a slower time. They took the risks, made a mistake; LA also took the
risks and he and his team didn't make the same mistake, which resulted in LA
wearing the jersey.

LA had the misfortune (or was it a mistake) of coming unclipped, how much
time did that cost him? 0s, 0.5s, 1s, 2s, etc? Would he have won if this
didn't happen? Had the fall not happened would he still be in yellow? No one
can say for sure, its all part of the race I guess. The guy can only ride
his race, and when he does it faultlessly and others don't he still doesn't
get blasted for it because "it's a win, but not in the same way". As long as
he didn't cheat it seems to me a win is a win, is a win.

Lets hope today's stage provides a less debated result!

Now you are presuming I made a basic mistake. Are you sure I have made a
"mistake" and its not that I have the "misfortune" of not having your
superior intelligence? I guess you're not going to answer the original
question so I'm going to go on presuming. Time to move on me thinks....
