'Morning BrisVegans...

I have signed up, I have paid... I have my interim proof of membership
(faxed back from Kapooka though, gee, being in ADFCC is a bit weird like
that, I'll only see my club members a few times per year...)

So now I don't have to pay day licence fees, who wants to hold my hand
and talk me through my first (real) race (which I haven't selected yet)?

Come to a Hamilton Pine Rivers Wheelers race. I could hold one hand,
Adam the other and you'll definitely fall off. You might have to wait a
few weeks though. This weekend is the Brisbane Metropolitan
Championships, too late to enter (not that you'd want to for your first
race) and next weekend, 18th, is the Club Criterium Champs at Lakeside.
The 25th would be a great first race if you don't mind a long drive out
to Somerset Dam. It's a handicap so you'd start with a small group
(5ish) of similar ability and try to catch the ones in front and not
get caught by the ones behind. The course is fairly hilly, very little
traffic, it says 40km on the program, I think it was a few more than
that last time I did it but they might be making it shorter this year.
Otherwise Lakeside the week after, it's a great safe course. I wouldn't
recommend Murarrie for your first race. I've never raced there but
there seems to be a lot of accidents there.

If you like hand holding why not try the madison? :) Like Bruce sai
consider coming out to Lakeside or Somerset Dam. (Is it that hill
bruce, only ridden it on a moto and I'd say it was that horrible wor
'undulating' ?) There's also the pairs tour on the 25th but you'd nee
to team up (doesn't have to be same club).

I'd agree about Murrarie but I've only done one race there. There see
to be crashes there all the time, but in over a year racing at Lakesid
I've only ever seen one crash.

Bruce, are you doing the metros? Good luck if you are, I'm pourin
concrete this weekend!

Hills usually seem bigger when you have to do the work yourself ;)
Nothing super steep, a couple of longer climbs, no flat bits,
'undulating' sounds about right.

No, I'm not doing them either. I'm a slacker when it comes to Open
races.

Murrarie isn't THAT bad, for goodness sake!! I've been out there only a
few times, and seen 1 stack - and that was a tosser at the back of a
huge bunch who was trying to sprint THRU the pack in the final
straight...

Anyway - advantage of Murarrie is that its close enough to ride there
as a 'warm-up'... Plus its only $6 to race!! And they have a little
coffee van that makes stroooong espressos - Mmmmmm

But I'm just lobbying for Murarrie because I'll be a member of Balmoral
CC come 1st July!! Hooray!! Shame they have a crap jersey, though....

So it's not a full camo green lycra kit?

Nothing against Murarrie, I just don't like crits much in general
really, I didn't particularly enjoy Nundah last weekend either. I
prefer road races with lots of hills to break the field up into smaller
groups, crits are too much like bicycle speedway racing. I don't think
they're a good place for beginners, though that's where most people
start because they're flat and they can keep up. So in lower grade
crits you end up with a large group of inexperienced riders all riding
at their limit on a narrow course with lots of corners.

Nah, it's ADF, not just Army. But damn, that'd be AWESOME! No one would
mess with me on my commute then!

Yeah that does sound kinda scary. See the only crit I did was ADF, in
with the boys, and they dropped me pretty damn fast.

in Handicaps, you can cooperate with anyone you catch/catches you.
Just whether its worth it, which works both ways.
They may be better off if you just hang on the back and don't interfer
with their rotation

Ha; Try finding lantana in the Tanami (seriously there are lantana free
places still). Make like a scorpion, hide in a cool depression during
the day and hunt at night (when it gets real cold and dark).

Salt bush doesn't make a good substitute either. And don't talk to me
about spiniphex.

Graham Kennedy's recent death prompted me to put my old copy of the Od
Angry Shot in the dvd player. Did you know it was shot at Canungra.
The Viet Cong were asian students recruited from Queensland Uni. Th
Army/RAAF provided a couple of Iriqoi flights for the film (don't thin
for free) which was barely enough. As the filming was underway
Chinook on Defence business flew over the film site so they filmed th
buggery out of that from as many angles as they could and used it in th
film

Not a bad portrayal of the Australian Army in the early to mid 1970'
but astute viewers can still sit and have a bit of fun picking th
inconsistencies.

If you haven't seen it, it is almost worth watching for the roll cal
of then young Aussie actors ('John Hargreaves
(http://www.rottentomatoes.com/p/john_hargreaves/), 'Graham Kennedy
(http://www.rottentomatoes.com/p/graham_kennedy/), 'Bryan Brown
(http://www.rottentomatoes.com/p/bryan_brown/), 'John Jarratt

Nah, that'd scrape you off before then because you'd interupt airflow to
the radiator;)

Never had much trouble with the roadtrains they were pretty good. The
Grey Nomads with their caravans are another story.

When I came back to Qld I spent a couple of years shaking my head at the
antics of the truck drivers on the coast (Following too close,
overtaking etc). Some of the things they do as normal practice would
have your tyres slashed and air lines cut in the NT (if they didn't just
punch your head in). Things are changing up there now with contract
drivers and some of the bigger firms moving in. sigh.

And spiniphex isn't all bad. Pull up a big bunch (or find one) and put
a heavy tarp over it. Best inner spring mattress money can't buy. The
resin makes a good plastic weld/superglue as well. If there's been rain
collect the seeds and stone grind to add to your damper. Adds a bit of
texture and has a pleasant flavour.

Cheers

Yeah - I'll trot along!!

Still don't have my membership - I'm waiting for july 1 so I can get
the half-price 6-month CA membership. Plus the 'extra training' will
probably be a good thing come my first race day...

But I'll definitely come along and cheer for the a.b'ers!! You can even
wheelsuck me on the way so you can save your energy for the race
*ROFLMAO*

So you and adam will be there - anyone else that I can cheer for on the
day?? Better say so - I don't want to throw a stick into someone's
spokes, and discover that they are an a.b lurker!!

I said I didn't have an excuse... I didn't say I would definitely do
it...

This whole Saturday morning thing doesn't work well for me. My do
graduated from preschool last week, and I've now enrolled him in Pupp
Commando (Tam, eat your heart out) which is also on a Saturday mornin
(how's that for a legitimate excuse?). The last class is 16 July afte
which I will be available every Saturday because the following course i
on a Wednesday night.

My experience with Murrarie is somewhat limited (have raced there
handfull of times a long time ago - that makes me feel so old), but
haven't experienced much in the way of stacks. It's fairly wind
though, which I always tend to find really annoying

Good luck in your race, Tam. Go get 'em

Puppy Commando? Does he learn about personal camouflage? And no free Wed
nites, does that mean you won't be joining the trapeze class at Vulcana
next term? Damn.

I have been badgered via an SMS barrage to race tomorrow. So that means
that there will be 3 of us racing - adam85, Tam & myself????

Adam - what exactly is the difference between Cat 2 & Cat 3?? Gotta
know which Cat to enter... Probably one below what Tam is entering...

Hey Abby,
Good to hear both you and Tam are giviing it a go! Cat 3 winners ar
often juniors if that gives you a guide. I haven't ridden with you an
Tam but I'd suggest giving Cat 2 a go or if you're not feeling stron
then Cat 3. Depends on whether you want to be beaten by an adult or
kid :)

I'll give either Cat 1 or maybe Elite a go. They start at 7 though, Ca
2 &3 at 7:45am http://www.balmoralcycling.asn.au/

Blue/White HPRW strip, red limar, carbon kuota. Probably won't see yo
unless you get there early, but I'll stick around and yell abuse at yo
both while you're racing. You're on an orbea right?

My Sunday adventure race got cancelled due to the cold/wet weather (see
we do that in Qld) and because a few teams pulled out, too much money
loss for the organisers and they didn't want to put the fees up, so they
postponed it. So I have no excuse for missing the crit tomorrow. Better
go see if I can buy a black jersey today (so you can't see blood
stains...) and I'll be on the dozer... heard there's a good chance I'll
stack, but I should recover in time for GC 1/2 M (I'm only running slow
for that, so it won't matter...)

Tam(don't know which helmet yet, prob the blue one, it's about due for a
crash; don't know which jersey, I guess ADF tri jersey, as ADF CC ones
aren't created yet; flame/black learsport 8000)

If I'm gonna be humiliated, I'd rather it be by an adult. I get
trash-talked enough by my own kids, without it happening when I'm
cycling as well!!!

Have they switched to 'winter times' for racing?? I thought it was 6am
for Cat 1/Elite, and 7am for the rest... I won't complain about the
extra sleep!!

Look forward to seeing you there - *shouts* anyone else going???

Hey Tam, don't worry about the stacks it's not *that* dangerous! I'd
recommend trying to stay in the front 1/3 or 1/2 of the pack whereever
you can to minimise the risk but do the minimum of work on the front.
Thought I should mention I seem to remember some stupid rule about
jerseys must cover the shoulders just in case your tri jersey is
sleeveless.

What kind of madman would CONSIDER a crit in something with no shoulder
cover? I'd like the first 30ms of tarmac to be lycra, please!

The worst thing is, it's been so long since I raced anything, when they
ask me how fast I ride, I'll be like "er... um... dunno"

Yep - I remember a couple of months ago, when i went along to watch. A
guy was about to start in a sleeveless jersey. Starters whistle went,
and the race commisaire dragged him off and told him to change!! He
spent some nervous secs begging people for their jersey, until someone
handed one over... They let him rejoin one lap down...

Absent Husband (laughing hysterically at the inequity of racing in the
same Cat as Tam...)

You corner faster than me, dude.

I just found out some other mates of mine are racing - Ken and Adam
and... well how many friends did you think I have?!

Excellent!! So that means I can save my day licence fee and just watch
from the sidelines??

We are ALL aware of my cornering ability, thank you very much... My
skin is still a bit discoloured from my last high-speed cornering
effort... :S

No! They're Cat 1 anyway!

Hehehe also I was more referring to the other, less-moist corners...
