Easy start, slow climb to the first village inside basque territory,
From
there a nasty climb up some switch backs, half in, half out of a
chilling
wind, I chased some mtber up, but when he saw I had panniers he
realised he was riding slowly and picked up the pace. Had a few
bocadillos in a villiage on the way up, and some nice guy
gave us some pears and grapes. Saw a stack of road weenies pass, and
chased then for awhile. It was ok when it was steep, but after it
flattened out they really got some benefit from the drafting and I
lost
em. Seems they cut out before the pass, but we were going over the
top,
the pass was at 1120m. The road really picked up on the way down, as
we
crossed back from navarra to pais vasco. At the bottom of that
descent we
decided to take the path thru the national forrest, what a stupid
idea
that was, it picked us up another nasty climb - but this one had a
roasting descxent on the other side - managed to clock 75km/h on a
loaded
tourer. All that weight sure keeps you on the tarmac. From here into
Vitoria it was pretty flat, just a small rise to clear before getting
into
town around 3pm. Slept for 11hrs that nite.
