Don't like the sound of this at all, an opportunistic attack or
something else that a Police's investigation will clear up?
In the article it is mentioned...

A father of three was viciously bashed in Melbourne's western suburbs
last night after going shopping for a birthday present for his toddler
son.
Glenn Bunker, 30, who was riding his bicycle last night when attacked
near the Hoppers Crossing railway station, is still unable to speak
after suffering a cracked skull and fractures to his eye sockets.
A passer-by noticed Mr Bunker around 10pm. He was still riding his bike
despite the massive head injuries but was incoherent.
Mr Bunker's tearful wife, Di, today said her husband was returning home
after going to several doctors' appointments and going shopping for a
birthday present for one of their sons, who turns two on Monday.
Mrs Bunker described her husband as a "fun-loving family man" who had
no enemies and had lived in Werribee all his life.
She said she had not yet told their three children - who are aged
almost two, four and seven - about Mr Bunker's ordeal.
"They (the children) are already asking me where he is. I've said he's
just at a friend's house, we'll get him later."
Mrs Bunker appealed to anyone with information to come forward.
"I really need your help. We've got three kids and . . . we need him to
come home. Somebody has to be out there who knows what happened to him.
They can't just do that and leave him there," she said.

stolen. He was not carrying any other valuables.
Mrs Bunker said doctors at the Royal Melbourne Hospital were still
running tests to determine the extent of her husband's injuries.
Detectives are hoping to speak to him later today to find out how he
was attacked.
