Hiya -- here's the three plus two halves best bike sightings of the
weekend:
First, the two halves of a bike sighting go to the couple on the
Saturday 40 miler group ride who were on Bike Fridays with 20" wheels
:-)
Second, the "Underbiking" award goes to the guy on the monocoque
carbon frame with deep, possibly carbon rims and matching skinny tires
(tubulars?) wearing the de rigor form fitting black shorts and clipped
into the pedals, tooling along through Mission Bay park with a plastic
grocery store bag full of orange juice pints hooked through the
handlebars -- the sort of fetch and carry utility task more often
handled by one speed cruisers in that flat, sea-level part of town.
Third, the "neat bike" award goes to the Terry Symmetri with 700c
rear wheel and 24" (540 mm, I think) front wheel. Special Feature: Two
Carradice Super C panniers!
Fourth, the "I'd worry about that" award goes to the guy on a
hardtail towing a heavy duty, pierced/expanded metal platform nursery
wagon (homemade hitch, I believe), at night. Lighting wasn't the big
issue -- he had a red LED blinking in the rear and both handlebar
headlight and head-mounted headlamp (also LED). The big issue was the
load -- a propane tank. It's not something I'd feel happy towing, much
less where he was going (Santa Fe Street, the local beer truck speed
run with both Bud and a local "microbrewery" down at the end).

Yours, Robert Leone
