View Full Version : Trials Course Love 99

Jester2000
April 4th 06, 11:54 PM
The unicycle trials course that Zack Baldwin and I have been steadily
building up for the past 3 summers finally makes its film debut in this
movie. The riding isn't anything spectacular, but the awesome music and
mesmerizing intro make up for it!

This was filmed over my winter break at home, in early January.

It's fun to mess around on this course.. but honestly, I've spent about
90% of my time on the course building stuff, and only 10% of the time
riding it.

Others have also helped out at random points in the making of this
thing (John Hooten, John Foss, Brian Lundgren, Ryan Atkins, Dan Heaton,
Sabin Arditty, Mike Clark, and one of my non-unicycling friends Kevin.
The majority of it was done by myself and Zack Baldwin.

Total Running Time: 7:42

LINKS: (hint, sacrifice 30 minutes of waiting (or hours) for the big
WMV, or quicktime versions!)

p.s. If you have any ideas for the name of the rail, let me know.
I've only gotten to about a foot past the midway point. Who woulda
thought that a curvy rail like that would be so damn hard!?

Damn you server must be really slow, it took me a whole three minutes to
download that quicktime version, a whole 616 kbps.

Seriously though; What an awesome intro. The idea and the feeling it
gave me felt like a real movie that I would see in theatres I don't
know if this is due to the medium used or just what you did but it
worked well. I also liked the name of the course, you must love this
course to have put soooo much time and effort into building it and it
really shows.

The variety in the park and the sheer amount of stuff makes it look
like you must have really planned alot of it out, I must say I am
jealous of your dedication.

The riding in it was really cool, I especialy liked the speedy riding
down those north shore style banks.

I would love to see another video shot there!

Thanks.

Has anyone ever done a frame stall? To do it you drop your frame to the
ground infront of you, then jump on the fork, right infront of your
tire. Then you hop back on your pedals and pull the frame up. Did I
invent this? or has someone done it before?

would dismantle it, and get rid of it.

markf wrote:

The two huge spools, the stairs, the "triangle" pallets (with
connecting rails to the big spool) all came from the trials course that
Zack built at his house. Meanwhile, I saw numerous medium sized spools
in the construction yard at my old highschool (they were doing
construction). I asked the principle, and he gave me a truckload of
spools. I had a small trials course at my house with that, and a bunch
of pallets. Eventually, Zack moved all his stuff to my house, and we
combined our courses (June, 2004). We got even more wood by driving
around to house constuction sites and asking the workers for warped
wood. They had all kinds of stuff to give us. Here's a 'thread'
(http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33145) I made when
we first started making the love 99 course. There are some good
beginning photos there.

ntappin wrote:
> you must have really planned alot of it out

Actually, we pretty much just used what type of stuff we had. It grew
really slowly, so every once in awhile there would be a new little
thing added. We did have plans for a crazy teeter that once one landed
on the vulcrum, the whole teeter would pivot and swing around. Similar
to the one Kris rides in U2. Obviously, that never happened...

That course is awesome. How does it hold up to the elements? If we
built something like that around here and left it outside it would
probably fall apart after a year. Wish I could ride it. You should
host a competition. :)

Loved the video too. Some cool shots and editing. The animals kicked
ass.

Wow, that really was a great movie! The filming and riding were superb
and your course looks like so much fun. Can I come over and try the
curvy rail please? ;) I'd kill to have a rail like that in my
backyard!

Have you considered filming in 16:9? It's a big committment, I know,
because once you change you either have to scrap of crop your old
footage...but it's well worth it! Try it out for a day. You'll love
the way it frames everything. Just film an exclusively widescreen
movie and see how you like it. If you want...

interesting. The riding was great but what could one expect from you

It's been fine so far. Some parts are rock-solid, other parts weren't
made as well and are a little rickety. A lot of the wood was already
crappy since we got it free from constuction yard workers giving us
their unwanted wood.

Hell yeah! They have such a soothing sound. I'm seeing them live here
at UCSB on 4/20 !

Absolutely. Email me at the start of my summer break (middle of June),
and we'll plan something. We'll try to wrangle up as many riders as
possible. Nobody better get hurt though... :(

Yes... I just haven't tried it yet. I'll take your word and try it out
soon.

My Dad does large-scale wrought-iron work, decorative railing/gates,
etc. For one job, he had to have big rails bent perfectly, and he had
a bunch done at some type of machine shop in Sacramento. He had a
couple pieces left over, each was particially curved. I was able to
connect them together with a smaller piece of pipe, and a lot of
pounding.

Later,

Jess

I was riding an '05 KH wheelset, bedford frame, snafu (old-style)
pedals, miyata seatpost tilted and welded for reinforcement, carbon
fiber seatbase with kinport handle, miyata foam and bumper, and kh
fusion seat cover.

p.s., right on with seeing Pinback live!

All you thread subscribers, make sure you read 'this'
(http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50622) thread, I
posted yesterday.
(that means YOU, Jason! Mr. "BTW, would you be interested in having a
"trials weekend" or something at your place when you're home from
school?")

Later,
