View Full Version : I need some closure on some freeride bikes...

Iam planning on buying a new freeride/ DH bike here soon, and my
parents don't seem to think that a bike for 5k is reasonable. If I
could get some feedback on what kind of bikes you ride and how much
you've payed for them, it may be helpful in persuading them that the
kind of drops and such that I want to do require a bike like that.
- 06' Santa Cruz V-10
- 06' Kona Stinky Primo
- 06' GT iT1
- 06' Trek Session 10
- 06' Yeti 303
- 06' Spacialized Demo 9
Obviously these are my top choices if I could get a recommendation and
why it is being recommended, it would take me that much closer to
getting to bike of which I want (preferably a GT iT1).

Cool!

It's your money... you earned it, so it doesn't matter what they think.

Oh. Persuading. Hmm. So you're not paying for it yourself.

Hmm. Well I guess you're not currently working. I would suggest getting a
job first, or use your excess scholarship money for toys like a DH bike.
Try eating less and living in cardboard boxes.

why bother? just start crying and pounding your fists into the floor,
and i'm sure they'll see your side of things.

What kind of drops DO you want to do that require a bike like that?
Steve.

That's the kind of expenditure that can only be justified on the basis
of genuine need, or of potential for return on investment. If it's
your money, of course, the ROI may be in enjoyment. If it's *not*
your money, what would the spender get in return?

I have several bikes of well-known name brands. I paid list price for
exactly zero of them. Used bikes offer far greater value for the
money in my experience. The bike I ride most often is built on a
frame retired by the bike division of the local police; it cost me a
total of about $100 to complete, though one with similar equipment
would fetch about $600 new. Unless your level of both skill and need
for competitive training is great enough to truly require a new
high-level bike, I would counsel tempering the aspirations to fit the
real needs, and would further advise getting a day job to allow
accumulating the cash to address those needs.

I paid $600 for my Surly 1x1. Although it's not technically a "freeride"
bike, I do feel pretty free when I ride it.

Take the 4k and invest it wisely. You will find that 10 yrs from now, your
chunk of change will grow nicely. Take the remainder 1k and buy a bike.

I recently dropped about $4k on a new Turner Sixpack, which is an
awesome bike, but it took a few months to save the cash from my wages,
it's the first 'new' bike I've even purchased (all the rest were second
hand or last year's stock) and I'm 36.

Do you ride freeride already????? You say the types of drops you want
to do and not what you're doing already, you have cleaned +10ft already
then? Or are you planning on attempting you first big drop on the new
bike?

Laters,

Best closure you can get on a freeride bike it t orun it over and call
it quits - then buy a bike you can ride uohillas well as down.

I've done some 10-16footers on a hardtail and its rough, hard to
control the landings...
