Experts debate labeling children obese By LINDSEY TANNER, AP Medical
Writer

Some quotes:

"Labeling a child obese might "run the risk of making them angry,
making the family angry," but it addresses a serious issue head-on,
said Dr. Reginald Washington, a Denver pediatrician and co-chair of an
American Academy of Pediatrics obesity task force.

"If that same person came into your office and had cancer, or was
anemic, or had an ear infection, would we be having the same
conversation? There are a thousand reasons why this obesity epidemic is
so out of control, and one of them is no one wants to talk about it."

and another:

The change "would certainly make sense. It would bring the U.S. in line
with the rest of the world," said Tim Cole, a professor of medical
statistics at the University College London's Institute of Child
Health.

The existing categories are convoluted and "rather ironic, since the
U.S. leads the world in terms of obesity," Cole said. "There must be an
element of political correctness."

The debate illustrates just how touchy the nation is about its weight
problem.

At least we're talking about it now.

Fat people can be very mean and viscious! Don't get one angry they'll try to
beat on you. The upside of that is that if they try to chase you they'll be
very slow and run out of breath within 20 seconds and maybe drop dead of a
heart attack!

Like he needed a doctor to tell him that. No wonder America is going down
the tubes! At least enjoy your Big Mac fattie, McFat-pants!

Reality sometimes sucks. Fortunately, denial is in good supply.

Dumbass,
I expect they become viscious or perhaps even viscous if you cook them at
the boiling point of fat for some time.

Are there any intelligent people in your country?

Dumbass -

When calories in is less than calories out, weight is lost.

What a painful reality that is. But no. It must be genetic!

thanks,

K. Gringioni.

Yeah Bill, but at least you're jolly.

Yes and no Henry. There ARE fat people in Ethiopia and the reason for
obesity in the USA is more from the fact of sitting around watching TV and
constantly nibbling than it is from eating a lot all at once.

We have taught children that it is bad to exercise, we've made it unsafe for
them to be on the streets and we've built houses over all of the empty land.
What would you expect to happen?

Hey Kurgan I agree with you about 90%, but you've got to include
having to deal with reduced metabolism due to either thyroid issues or
inability to get any reasonable exercise. It's still workable but
damned tough.
