View Full Version : Julian Dean fined in Stage 4.

In the finishing sprint of stage 4 Julian Dean went down
and was fined SF 200. I do not see that the fine is
justified.

In the live race video from the front He was JRA when his
own team mate bumped Dean from Dean's left. Both riders
rebounded, team mate to his left and Dean to his right.
Dean went into another rider, then down to the pavement.
Does anyone know more about this fall? All further replays
from above started after Dean and team mate jostled. What
did Dean do wrong?

Was he the rider who was looking to his left and drifted into the rider
to his ride and splatting? I don't know what the technical term would
be, but it might be "hazardous" pedaling or failing to keep your cycle
under control. Just wild guesses...

I'll wait for a proper answer also...

I didn't really study it, but it looked like he turned his head to the side
and simply drifted into the guy on the other side. I didn't see any contact
and I don't think he moved over deliberately, although maybe he was trying
to make room since the road narrowed. Anyway, with his skills I was
surprised he fell actually. Surely the fine was for "irregular" riding.

OLN's site has video of the crash.

He was penalized for dropping off pace in the center of the bunch.
It is accepted to drop, but you have to move to the side.
Rules can be picky.

"It just so happened I couldn't move to the left 'cause we were coming into
the left hander before the final straight. If I'd moved off to the left, I
would've had guys up my arse into the corner and if I hadn't of moved over
to the left or right, I still would've had guys up my arse. Anyway, as I
pulled off, I got bumped by one of Boonen's boys coming round the outside of
me. He saw that we were gonna collide so he leant in with his shoulder ready
to take the weight. I was relaxed and trying to get my breath after the
lead-out and wasn't expecting the collision so I dropped like a rag doll. If
I was in full flight, fully gripped and tense, then I'm pretty sure that I
wouldn't have gone done.

Today, the other rider involved came up and apologized. Didn't seem like his
fault or mine but just one of those things that happen. Yet, we still have
to pay the fine even though everyone involved, once again, accepted that it
was just one of those crap moments in sprinting.."
