View Full Version : Worth rebuilding bike

I've an old Marin Muirwoods bike. It's been out of action for close to
10 years. Before that it was pretty worn out.

I'm guessing I'm going to need to replace the wheels, gear/chain
system, brakes etc. Is it worth rebuilding the bike, or should I just
get rid of it and buy something new?

Worn out? Can you be more specific? Likely it can be made
ridable for a modest cost in time and money.

Can it be ridden?
Do the tires hold air?
Are the wheels true?
Are the rims worn thin on the side walls? They will appear
distinctly concave if they are.

* Repack wheel bearings, bottom bracket bearings,
and headset bearings.

* Replace the chain.

* Check the rear cogwheels for wear.

* Replace the cables.

* Replace the brake blocks.

* Remove the seat post and grease the interface.

* Open all threaded fasteners, and grease them.

You get the idea? Someone here can recommend a good book.
My opinion is that any bike but a department store bike is
worth rebuilding. It can be made into a good bike for some
purpose be it single speed or town utility bike or
something else.
