I saw a suggestion for r.b.m.helmet-wars a couple years ago, and since
the H-W battle just goes on and on (with occasional lulls), I think
it's time to seriously consider starting this group (then diligently
trimming H-W replies to that group only).

I'll spearhead the process if anyone can tell me where to start.

And another, simpler one: If you're not interested, don't read those
posts.

It would quickly degenerate into a name-calling argument about whether it is
appropriate to discuss the topic.

You can also pretty much assume that all helmet threads include these
statements:

--Helmets help.

--No, they don't.

--Check the statistics.

--The cited statistics are no good.

--If helmets are so helpful, why don't you wear them while (insert non
cycling activity)?

--Mandatory helmet laws discourage cycling.

--No, they don't.

--Check the statistics.

--The cited statistics are no good.

I'm sure there are more, but once you have read one helmet thread, you
may as well have read them all.

You've missed the insult and invective that usually accompanies some
of those points - tell us, do you not read the posts by Bill Sornson,
Ozark, Starr, Zaumen, et alii?

My favorite, which I believe you missed, is: "Please cite your references
for that." If this were applied to our everyday encounters, this would be
typical"

Person A: "Nice day."

Person B: "Based on what?"

No. Mostly all are filtered.

It's rather more like:

Person A: "Nice day - and beacuse it is so, you must wear this tie or
a terrible calamity will befall you."

Person B: "Based on what?"

Umm, I've responded in that manner more than a few times, often when
some excessively chirpy and cheery femme has come bouncing into the
vicinity at Much To *&^%$#@ Early, loudly announcing "Good Morning!!!"
well in advance of the first caffeine of the day.

Sometimes I wonder how those genes survive.

M: Look, I CAME HERE FOR AN ARGUMENT, I'm not going to just stand...!!
Q: OH, oh I'm sorry, but this is abuse.
M: Oh, I see, well, that explains it.
Q: Ah yes, you want room 12A, Just along the corridor.
M: Oh, Thank you very much. Sorry.
Q: Not at all.
M: Thank You.
(Under his breath) Stupid git!!

Person A: "Based on the fact that I am your boss, I have an MBA, I
think neckties are nifty, even in this environment full of rotating
machinery, and I can fire you for not wearing one."*

Person B: "Too late. Wear it yourself, I'm outa here."

* Not verbatim, but essentially the content of a statement made to a
Hughes Tool employee at a facility I used to visit infrequently. He
bought a clip-on tie (in fluorescent orange; I have no idea where he
got it) and wore that instead. They tried to make him wear one in a
muted color; he cited company policy about safety hazard labelling,
and noted that OSHA specifically enumerated neckties as a safety
hazard in his working environment.

Many people especially "newbies", start new groups in the hope that the
trolls and flame threads that periodically (or frequently) plague their
own group as the originators of those threads move to the new group.
Sadly, it doesn't work that way for the simple reason that the people
how post these topics want to express their message at large, not just
"preach to the choir". And of course trolls just want to spread
disruption as far as possible.

No the best solution is still as always: if you see a post or thread
that will undoubtedly lead to a flame war, don't post to it. In fact,
resist the temptaion altogether, IGNORE IT! let the other topics
eventually pust it off the board.
