View Full Version : annus ridiculus

Whatever the outcome - and L'Equipe states that the investigation is
ongoing - the episode must be considered the crowning glory at the end of
professional cycling's annus ridiculus. Or maybe that's still to come: the
announcement of Tyler Hamilton's new team is due any moment now.

Hmmmm. But we're only half way through November. There's lots of time
left yet

And Davey does truly believe that his old Latin Master, a cynical old
19th century Dinosaur, would have preferred Davey to write "annus
ridiculum"

On the subject of Latin, do you have a clean copy of your Olympic hypo
parody that we might use on sublimated jerseys? If so, I'll give you an
email address to send it to.

Davey will make you up another one since he never keeps old junk around. It's
easy to do when he gets a few spare minutes and can modify it to your
satisfaction.

The email Davey is using on his posts is 'live' so he actually
reads mail sent to it if you want to email him as opposed to what he
used to use which, whilst a valid address, was never read by Davey
[It's actually not on to spoof an addy, but there's no law says one
has to actually read any mail sent to any particular address] Any
variance on 'whois' between Davey's IP and his azurservers.com
domain merely reflects the fact that he hasn't changed his nameservers
over yet, and in point of fact might never change them over for
various reasons.

On the Latin bit, I was actually just arguing the purist position for
the sake of argument. Which position you take sorta depends whether
your Latin Master was an Oxford or a Cambridge man because those
useless ******z still argue whether Ancient or Classical Latin is the
one the True Believers should adopt and the differences sometimes
produce some weird constructs. In any instance Davey believes that any
establishment teaching Latin should be raized to the ground and its
board of directors prosecuted for child abuse

General useage would agree that 'annus ridiculus' is the way to go

But try translating this Doggerel:

Caesar adsum iam forte;
Brutus eterat.
Caesar sic in omnibus,
Brutus sic intram.

Babelfish doesn't do Latin.

Babelfish doesn't do anything

It would be hillarious to see what it made of the above though

Nice try

Caesar had some jam for tea;
Brutus ate a rat.
Ceasar puked on the bus,
Brutus on the Tram

tea=evening meal in England
Tram=streetcar/trolley/etc
