Looking for damage from accident or travel on airplane, train etc ...

Are you sure you can't get the coverage you want under homeowners? A
friend of mine recently had her bike come off a car bikerack after one
of our club rides and it was covered under her regular home insurance.
This is in California.

Well, my insurance company have told me that if its damaged while abroad its
not covered ... :(
It's covered for theft if I have a police report.

I haven't found any insurance in the USA as of yet.
In Europe they have insurance though. So if you are headed there youmight
have better luck.
Airline insurance for a bike, humm, my first thought is no way, but maybe
you can buy extra at the airline itself.

Kind of sounds like Auto insurance. Good only in the USA and Canada.
When you cross the Rio Grande, you have to buy insurance there for
while you are in mexico. Oh, don't forget your passport if you leave
the USA, you will need it to get back in.

Check with a travel agent, they should be able to get you something.
Lots of riders take thier bikes. If you can avoid a US only leg,
international rules forbid charging for a bicycle as luggage.

Your first thought is correct. The airlines don't even want to be in the
business of making money selling insurance. They're just having too darned
much fun destroying & losing things to want to do that.

You can probably get damage insurance with your homeowners/renters
insurance. Shop around.

If you just bought the bike and paid with a credit card, you may have
insurance from the credit card. Check on it.

You can also buy travel insurance, if you're purely worried about travelling.
Check with a travel agent, or American Express (I think they still sell it).

Have you actually read your home insurance policy? You're
probably already covered, and most folks NEVER read their policy
until they need to file a claim, often only to find out that what
they want to claim is not covered.

If you're not already covered, contact your home insurer and ask
how much it would cost to add a "Personal Articles Floater" to
your current home insurance. It usually requires you to
inventory the insured items and provide proof of the value.

Personal property coverage under homeowners or renters typically covers
damage from specified perils including fire, theft, vandalism, vehicle
impacts, aircraft, and falling objects. Coverage is often world-wide.

But that doesn't cover everything, e.g. if a bike gets damaged as
checked baggage on an airplane, it's not vandalism, probably wasn't
struck by a vehicle or plane, probably not a falling object, probably
not a covered loss.

You can get a separate "floater" policy to cover a bicycle against all
forms of loss. Most agents have probably never been asked for one and
won't know they exist. Others won't be bothered with a dinky little
policy like that. Don't know what they'd cost these days, haven't been
asked to quote one in years.

If your existing insurance agent can't find a market for a bicycle
floater, call around other agents in town.

Disclaimer: If you don't see my name on your policy, I'm not your
insurance agent.

We went this route when my wife and I were travelling extensively with our
bikes overseas. My agent wrote the policy as a "rider" on my existing
homeowners policy. I don't remember the exact cost, but it was less than
$100 for $10,000 worth of coverage.

Good luck,

I'm also in California. The problem is that there's a limit of less than
$1000 on my homeowners policy for bicycles. I tried to get a specific
coverage for a higher amount, but they wouldn't do it. I will try
shopping around someday, but I have my car insurance with them too, so
it's not so simple.

Cheers,
David

As others have mentioned, many insurance agents are willing and able to
add floaters or riders to supplement the regular homeowners policy if
the limits there are too restrictive for your needs. Of course,
there's no guarantee that your particular agent will do so.

The case I mentioned above was for considerably above $1000 and was
covered without any addition to the basic homeowner's policy - but
limits on such items do vary.
