I need a bike

I a 41 year old new biker. That is, a friend and myself have decided
to try biking. So far so good. Our goal is a 60 mile trip through
bike paths in Northern Virginia. We are diligently training.

The problem: My bike is too small. I need to purchase a better bike
and I am told some of my "pains" will go away. I need suggestions. I
want something effective, but not costly. I need to determine if this
hobby will last or not before I spend sizable money. Any suggestions
on a manufacturer and model for an entry level bike (under $500) would
be great.

In this price range, I bought a Giant MB for myself and a Trek hybrid for my
wife.
I've driven around 500 km on my Giant so far this summer and I'm very
satisfied. Just yesterday, I went on a difficult cross country trail and
never had to get off my bike.
You probably want to get some proper gear too. I mean having good biking
shorts, t-shirt, gloves, helmet is important and rather than spending an
extra 100$ on the bike, you could buy those.
