Apparently Bettini only had ten of those jerseys made... he'd better get on
the phone to his tailor.

Yikes! The way I read the reports one rider brought down the others
but it seems they came down independently. Strange that the leaders
didn't crash.

They didn't have to brake before the line.

There was a lot of paint (sponsors logos) on the road. Fine if you coast
across it, very dangerous in the wet if you have to even touch the brakes.
One of the Tinkoff boys went down, then Bettini went down, and between the
two of them they were occupying a lot of the road. So the people behind
them had to brake madly just on the painted logos, so they all went down,
and from that point on it was a house of cards.

There seems to be something wrong with Italian tarmac. A few days ago
the whole peloton went down (barring the first 20 or so riders) again
as a result of light rain. That was how Bettini damaged his ribs and
had a couple of days at the back.

Wasn't it a painted white line in the wet that caught Chris Boardman out
in the 1995 TdeF when he broke his ankle and arm?

Possibly. I know it was the white line (down the middle of the road)
that did for one of the Motorola (or has it just become US postal?)
team in the TTT a few years back, he was too busy concentrating on
where he would slot back into the line and went down like a sack of
spuds as his front wheel ran along the edge of the line.

Steer well clear of line sin the road. Another reason for not riding
in the gutter.

Or in the white line delineated cycle lane ;-)

I know this is terrible -- as I'm sure it hurt pretty bad! -- but did
anyone else find that second clip funny? (Even just slightly?)... You
see the first one-or-two and you're like, "Ouch"; but then half the
pelaton crosses the line upside down and... and... OK, maybe I've just
got a sick sense of humour!

http://www.steephill.tv/2007/giro-d-italia/ has pretty good coverage
-- granted, the feed is the same (from RAI), but lots more info and
written commentary in English.

It's not just you, I couldn't keep a straight face watching the second
one either. You don't actually see anyone crash, it just looks like a
load of guys on a water slide with their bikes.
