View Full Version : Announcing MMMM! As apposed to BMW (Midlands Mad Muni Meet)

leo_h
July 30th 07, 04:53 PM
Howdy all!

Edd and Leo bring you MMMM! The Midlands Mad Muni Meet!

Okay the Midlands Mad Muni Meet is basically a Muni weekend which
entails riding in two primary muni locations in the Midlands (well
chiltern hills area).

1. Chicksands - trails and Northshore - Saturday
2. Ashridge Forest - Trails, tracks an general rides - Sunday

All styles are welcome, experts to beginners, although it will mainly
be Muni, there could also be natural trials included if anyone so
desires.
MMMM is being organized instead of having a fully fledged BMW as some
people consider a ride at chicksands not suitable to be called a
"british", perhaps their right, i dont know but hey!

This should hopefully be great Muni, north shore, and socialising event
with a really chilled atmos with no competitions or whatnot. (however
if u wanna race at chicksands theres nobody stopping ya!)

The two possible dates are the 22nd-23rd of sept or 29th-30th of sept,
depending on whichever is most apropriate for the majority of riders.

There are youth hostels around the area so there should be plenty of
places for people to stay, if anyone needs more info just post and i'll
find out more.

Alright who's interested? please post your thoughts on this and if the
date is ok, we can always move it to suit either.

We also made a video from a recent ride when visited chicksands, for
anyone who hasn't seen it the tread is 'here!'

As for pictures and meeting places etc i will post in due coarse.

Leo and Edd

Sounds fun, I've never been over that way and I think I'm free that
weekend so I'll stick it up on my calendar.

Incidentally I'm most peeved you used the idea before I got round to
it; I've been meaning to organise a Mostly Malvern Midlands Muni Meet
(MMMMM!) for ages... :)

I'm up for this as well, but there's a high chance I can only make the
Sunday at Ashridge Forest. Not worried about that, since I've been to
Chicksands once before so no need to change things for my benefit.

I'm glad you've put Ashridge Forest on Sunday's agenda, since this
Saturday worker had to miss out on the Ashridge muni on Edd's first
Milton Keynes session.

If ashridge is close to you, then so is chicksands, its only about 1/2
hour away!

Right, I think we have decided on the 22nd-23rd. Sorry if thats wrong
Leo, but we need to get a date out there so people can arrange
transport/accommodation ect!

Im reallly looking forward to this, should be a great weekend of
chilling, riding and meeting great people! Both locations make for some
excellent muni for beginners and more advanced riders.

Hope we have a good turn out!

Rock on!

If you do it now it could be the Mostly Malvern Monumentally Moist and
Muddy Midlands Monsoon Muni Meet for Mariners.

Edd/Leo: I'd quite like some more practice on that northshore (even
though I'm useless at it) and the four cross and slalom courses are
excellent fun. I probably won't be able to make it, but if I'm able to
get away that weekend I'll try to get over there.

Chicksands has some great entry level stuff to get you in to north
shore, it's not all hairy gap jumps like in the video. I guess we
should start thinking about who's driving from where so the
younger/carless riders can get lifts.

That was the first time any of us had ridden North shore! It had never
appealed to me before, but once I had a taste I loved it! Can't wait to
get back up there!

I don't mind giving some people a lift up there, Iv only got two places
in the car though.

Quite the opposite, 99% of the trails on the hills are bone dry and
dusty now. The only reminder of the rain now are a few fallen trees and
some huge great ruts up to two feet deep in places where torrents of
water have scoured the surface of the trail away.

I can ride about enjoying the sunshine while looking down at the
Worcestershire Ocean all around... :)

I disagree with that. The signs like the one Joe is posing next to, -all
of them- either say "Difficult" or "Severe"; Loosemoose said there
wasn't any easy stuff at all there.

I didn't have the guts to ride any of it at all. The only low section
to practice on is practically a skinny with an upward slope onto it,
which I only rode properly once, and only because I was holding onto
someone. I did ride half of it solo, but the tens of other attempts
were halted on the entrance slope by my fear.

I can't make Saturday either on this weekend or on the next MK ride,
but then again it's good that no-one else will get to see how much of a
rubbish rider I really am.

Sorry to sound harsh GK but if you never try anything slightly above
your skill level you will never improve. I didn't think I was going to
be able to ride north shore, it looked really scary stuff in Universe
and the like. When we got there I just got stuck in and had a go and
found out it was tremendous fun!

No-one cares if you are a rubbish rider or not, as long as you are
enjoying yourself then thats all that matters! :) Thats what unicycling
is about, having fun, not who is better than who, thats why we are
making this a chilled out sociable weekend, no races, no pressure, just
fun!

I hope to see you again sometime GK, be it at one of these or another
ride!

EDIT: Just read Joes post down there \/ and its true, there are marker
posts with easy on them.

Rock on!

Not true, GKMac. Some of them were easier.

Also, you dont HAVE to do North Shore. There is great Muni around the
place. There are 3 routes, the Blue route, the Red route and the Black
route, each abit harder than the next.

In conclusion, I think there is something there for everyone.

Kisses,

Believe me, I do try! Did you not witness me ride down those four big
steps again and again at the last MK ride?

The problem is that if I do try something that's in the slightest bit
dangerous, my instincts just force me to abort
and get off the unicycle straight away, no matter how much I try to
convince myself that I am capable of doing it.

Have you ever picked up a plate, and ended up dropping/putting it down
when your fingers told you it was red-hot? You have no control over
that. In the same way, I cannot stop myself from bailing out from
things like that.

Hmmm, don't recall seeing that sign when I was there.

So the picture is proof of a sign saying "easy", but there doesn't
appear to be any northshore next to it...

That sign is right next to that big drop that Joe did along side the
bike. It is a short section of mellow downhill, easy but fun still. Leo
and I also found some really fun trails that weave in and out of the
trees, they are super easy but fun!

We tried riding the dual slalom and four cross tracks but found them
pretty boring really, and I buckled Leos 26" by landing sideways on it!
:o

Thats great Joe! Can't wait to see it!

So, who is coming to this?

Rock on!

Is it possible to do any of the trails on a 20" unicycle? Is it just too

A 20" would probably be awesome on the northshore! There are really
steep downhill bits too, which would be fun to have a go on a 20".

I'll probably be coming on the saturday. Not sure about the sunday,
there's a cycling event going on and they're shutting the roads in the
middle of london for the day, seems like a pretty unique opportunity to
charge about on the 36.

Rupert dropped me a link about it some time ago, I presume he still
intends to get down there for it. As long as you promise to Schlumpf
slow we'll join you, my coker speed isn't up to much.

I wouldnt say too far really, jel.
The muni itself can be riden for as long as you want... the ride to the
North Shore area is around 20mins (if we go the right way :)). Once
there, you can use it as a base, and not venture too far if you dont
want to.

Ive got a feeling this is going to be rather relaxed, and basicly you
can do as much or as little as you want.

thejdw wrote:

And yes the confirmed date is the 22nd-23rd of sept, no changes etc.

Right meeting places an times!

Chicksands - Saturday 22nd - meeting place in the car park on sandy
lane in Rowney Warren Wood at 10.30. Just 'there'
(http://tinyurl.com/2vd6ga):
[image:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o281/leo_hawkes/IMGP4797.jpg]

Ashridge - Sunday 23rd - meeting place at the base of the monument at
10.30 also, 'here' (http://tinyurl.com/2h8bdr) :[image:
http://www.tring.gov.uk/info/places/ashmon.jpg]

As for staying overnight anyone who needs to is welcome to camp in our
back garden, there is space for 2 two-man tents, and if necessary there
is also floorspace in our extension (depending what condition it is in
at that time). I think edd was intending to have a little bbq style
thing on the saturday night aswell for anyone intrested, i however have
been invited to a old mates 30th that evening but i will of course be
able to make the ride in the day.

Right who's still interested?

leo and edd

500 mile round trip for me, but I'm sure it will be worth every mile :)

Thats the great thing about Muni - if it does rain, I dont think it
spoils it, unlike Trials. You just get muddy :D

I'm looking to set off from here about 6.30 pm, so aim to get to yours
about 11 on Friday night.

Where are we riding again? I remember Chicksands is where we got
talking to those bikers off the big drop wasnt it? And Ashridge is the
more gental one?

Joe,

Well, iv got to go to a friends 21st birthday party in the evening, so
Joe (He doesn't know yet!) and me will be going and getting rather
merry. Leo is going to one of his friends 30th birthday do. So I don't
know when the riding will stop, but Leo and I both have to be somewhere
in the evening.

Hope that helps,
Edd
