don't get on the inside of lorries, particularly at junctions, she paid the
ultimate price for her actions.

A lot of people get taught a lot of things. Doesn't mean everyone is a
perfect practioner of what they learned.

Would you say that cycling appears to be quite dangerous?

Many thanks for the information - keep them coming - appreciated.

Stopping distances for bicycles do not appear in the HC ... and so
cannot be of any consequence.
(Simon Mason - who cycles at 25mph in 20 mph limits - and thinks it's clever)

when did you last see a cyclist stop at a set of traffic lights? Pound to a
penny she rode up the inside.

Every day, you ****. And so do you.
This morning I stopped for a pedestrian plus sprog. The car behind me
stopped.
The pedestrian still waited. Quite rightly as it happened. The car
coming from the opposite direction did not slow down and just drove
through. I don't generalise from it.

I can honestly say that I do not see cyclists stop at lights, they just ride
on through, every time. If I ever see one I will mention it here.
And yes, I do think she rode up the inside, and by so doing she put herself
into mortal danger, perhaps if she had been trained in road use then this
tragedy need not have occurred.

I'm on record as saying every morning I see cyclists RLJ on my way to
work, I'm also on record as saying for every one that jumps lights there
are about 20 who don't.
It's the one in twenty I have trouble with.

He's like Mike Vandeman, only without the balls to actually go out and
confront people face to face. Admittedly that got Vandeman arrested for

I thought I made it plain enough.
I see some that stop (correct)
I see some that had stopped (correct)
I see some that pass the stop line & stop the other side of the
pedestrian crossing (wrong)
I see some that stop, ride across the pavement to avoid the lights, then
join the other carriageway e.g. LH turns (wrong)
I see some (many) who anticipate the light change jump the red light &
drive through the pedestrian crossing when the green man is lit (wrong)
I see the same as the above but turn left (wrong)
I also see some who just barge through whatever the light show. (wrong)

I estimate that the law breakers to the lawful is about 1 in 20

Is that clear?

Meanwhile - todays breaking news - 34,299,993 motorists drove 1,150,506,341
miles without killing anyone.

How many have to die before psycholists realise a push bike simply isn't a
viable form of transport?

Statistically highly improbable. The road fatality rate is between five
and ten per day, on average.

Probably the driver fails to take in the cyclist as stopped, he
probably assumes the cyclist will follow normal practice and just
ignore the red lights thus not be there as he moves off.

Maybe as he was over the limit he should not have been driving at all?

Not really, because you have not seen 19 cyclists stop at a red light and
only 1 go through. Try observing a set of lights for a while and count the
number of cyclists that just roll through on red and the number that stop
before the stop line and wait for the green before proceeding. I doubt if
you will see even ten per cent stop when they should.

You've been attending the DerekC school of flaming I see.

Hint: 5 < 7 < 10

Oh, and for 2009 it was 6.0876712328767123287671232876712. Do you think
exactly 6.0876712328767123287671232876712 people died on the roads each
and every day of 2006?

My statement is as I made it, I'm sorry you don't like it (well I'm not
really)

But at the set of lights I am thinking of, it would not be unusual to
see 30 cyclists waiting at the lights at the time I am there.

And do not forget according to some on this NG I am a cyclist hater.

If writing a recurring decimal, it is better to mark the recurring
section, e.g. 6.0'87671232', then there is no need to keep repeating
it.

Read what he said, not what you wish he'd said.

It's usually only the last few yards of a journey in which a collision occurs
(in the tiny proportion of journeys which result in a collision, that is).
Taking those few yards out of the arithmetic doesn't make a significant
difference to the overall distance travelled.

He is therefore not wrong - but you are.

See what I did there?

I copied the debating style often used by you and Mr Crispin.

Yes, you offered a way in which the statement could be interpreted as

I wonder why you snipped the bit where I observed that I had simply imitated
a "debating" style that you often use?

You are wrong above as well. "Today's breaking news - 34,299,993 motorists
drove 1,150,506,341 miles without killing anyone" is not meaningless. It may
be right, it may be wrong and it may well not be what the poster actually
meant to say, but it isn't meaningless. Your concurrence is not the
definition of "meaning".

One of Guy's standard debating techniques is to imply that a poster
has made an error without actually stating what it is. This probably
means he can't actually refute what was said, or doesn't understand
it!

Whereas Derek's technique is to make big errors and then staunchly
defend them against all comers.. Usually he eventually realises what
he's done and tries to then divert attention away but in some cases he
is still blissfully ignorant of the errors he's made vide. the current
issue of going over the bars and landing on your head.

I have provided you with enough written and video evidence that
cyclists can, and quite frequently do, go over the handlebars. You
only need the bike to stop suddenly due to heavy braking or a
collision and Newton's first law and gravity does the rest.

Thereby giving an illustration of diverting attention from your errors.
Nobody has claimed cyclists don't go over the handlebars. They have
said that your claim that when it happens cyclists rotate round the
handlebars to land on their heads is nonsense and nothing you have
posted or declined to post has shown otherwise.

38% of cyclists who are involved in reported road traffic accidents
suffer some degree of head or facial injury (source DfT)!

But you haven't provided the one piece of evidence that was asked for
first, has been asked for repeatedly since, and would be the one piece
that would definitively prove the "simple physics" that the cyclist
would go land on their head, the diagram.
Where is the diagram Derek?

How much time have you spent searching youtube, looking up statistics ,
trying to find quotes? Wouldn't be just so much simpler ,easier and
quicker to draw the diagram?

You can draw it, can't you Derek?
You do understand the forces involved, you aren't just parroting phrases
like " rotational couple" are you Derek?

Where is the diagram Derek?

So what? Most are hit by motor vehicles, not by going over the
handlebars. So just another attempt to distract from the fact that you
are both wrong and trying to avoid admitting it by changing the subject.

For pedestrians by the way the figure is 48% and they don't even have
any handlebars to rotate around.

There was no error except the ones made by Guy.

Not that his were accidental, you understand.
