Shropshire mountain biker airlifted after fall

A mountain biker has been airlifted to hospital in Shropshire after
suffering a serious chest injury.

The man, 43, was riding about half a mile east of Little Stretton
shortly before 1900 BST on Monday when he went over his handlebars on
a steep slope.

An ambulance crew got their vehicle as close as possible but had to
walk for around 15 minutes carrying their equipment to get to the
patient.

The man was airlifted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Given the location
of the incident, the crew requested a helicopter and the Midlands Air
Ambulance from Cosford was dispatched to the scene.

"As it was on route, the crew assessed the condition of the patient,
who was found to have a serious chest injury.

The man, from Church Stretton, was immobilised using a neck collar and
spinal board before being airlifted to hospital.
