Injured mountain biker rescued

Published: September 24. 2011 4:00AM PST

A mountain biker who injured himself while riding near the Wanoga Sno
Park was rescued Thursday evening, the Deschutes County Sheriff’s
Office said.

Perry Hertler, 40, of Milwaukee, was riding down the Tiddlywinks Trail
when he failed to negotiate a jump, seriously injuring himself. A
friend who had been riding with him called 911 and directed rescuers
to their location.

Hertler was treated at the scene and flown to St. Charles-Bend for
serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Injured Mtn. Biker Rescued West of Bend

BEND, Ore. -- A mountain biker from Wisconsin who was injured trying
to make a jump on a trail west of Bend Thursday evening was rescued by
officers and volunteers, authorities said.

Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies and Search and Rescue, as well as
Oregon State Police, were dispatched around 6:15 p.m. to the report of
an injured mountain biker on the Tiddlywinks trail, out of Wanoga Sno-
Park, said sheriff’s Deputy Rhett Hemphill.

They learned Perry Hertler, 40, of Milwaukie, had been riding his
mountain bike down the trail when he failed to negotiate a jump he’d
gone over and fell, causing serious injury, Hemphill said. A friend
riding with him was able to call 911 and give their location.

Two sheriff’s deputies, an OSP trooper and seven SAR members responded
by mountain bike, ATV and on foot, he said.

Hertler was located and treated on scene by SAR medics, then placed in
a wheeled “ambu-sled” and taken by ATV to the Wanoga Sno-Park, where
he was moved to a waiting AirLink helicopter.

Hey, jumps on trails are fine. But, cellfones should not be allowed.
Without the cellfone, the backcountry jumps might be much smaller :)

Good point! I agree. By the way, what is the "app" for "how to fix my
broken neck"?

Yes, they do. Habitat restoration is something everyone should be
doing, to try to correct the mess humans have made of the world.
Mountain bikers, on the other hand, only know how to DESTROY habitat.

you fool. saws only destroy plants and trees, they can do absolutely
nothing to benefit them. a true naturalist would let everything do
its own thing, instead you were on the trail cutting up trees and
vines and who knows what else.

you are a failure and a hypocrite. hows that auto dependency thing
workin' out for ya? about as well as the hope and change??? LOL!

your phd is about as deserved as obamas nobel peace prize. you should

Obama is going to be a one term president. He is even worse than Carter,
something I hitherto thought was impossible. Obama not only represents
personal failure, but failure of the entire liberal progressive ideology. He
couldn't even get health care right!

The risk of injury is one that every mountain biker understands, and
thus undertakes in the sport accordingly. It is unfortunate that this
man is injured, but it is not unheard of by any means. Every aspect of
our life involves risk, even riding public transportation, something
you often advocate, and it is up to the individual to decide what
risks to take. No one forces you to ride your bike off of jumps, it is
entirely a personal choice.

Mountain bike trails often contain jumps because negotiating them is
extremely enjoyable, such that the discipline of riding called Dirt
jumping has been created specifically for that purpose. Pictured in
the link below is a series of dirt jumps of various sizes.

http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/7211388/

Trails that are multi-use, ie. intended for both hikers and cyclists,
will almost never have jumps on them, and if they do they will be
easily negotiable, and not feature gaps between the take off and the
landing as shown in the picture below.

http://www.pinkbike.com/photo/7185647/

Trails that are created for the purpose of cycling on the other hand,
are free to have whatever stunts they like, as only cyclists will be
attempting them. An example of something built on a mountain biking
specific trail that shouldn't be on a multi use trail is the teeter-
totter shown in the picture below.

I see no issue with stunts like jumps on mountain bike specific
trails, for the very reason that they are intended for the use of
cyclists only.

Please do not respond to this post by saying "did you say
something?",
as you so often do, ignoring someone's statements in that manner is
simply a method of admitting that they are right. I would much prefer
you to actually comment upon what I (and others have to say), so that
we can engage in a proper, intelligent discussion or debate.

Cyclists who do a lot of mountain biking do indeed know the risks, but most
neophytes do not. Their brains are full of all sorts of nonsense about how
enjoyable it can be without any awareness of the dangers. Mr. Vandeman
performs a valuable service by informing neophytes of the dangers.

Single track trails for mountain bikers need to constructed especially for
them and should not be mingled in any manner with trails for hikers.
Abandoned city dumps and gravel pits would be ideal for them.

"Multi-use trail" is an oxy-moron. Cyclists need their own trails just as
hikers do.

Neither Mr. Vandeman nor I care in the least if mountain bikers want to kill
themselves doing dumb things. However, we do not want these fools anywhere
near trails for hikers. Get your own trails and stay off of ours!

If he doesn't care what mountain bikers are doing, why does he insist
upon posting articles like these about injured riders?

We care about what mountain bikers are doing to the extent that they impact
hiking trails and wilderness values. Both Mr. Vandeman and I detest mountain
bikers and would like to see them all dead, at least those that like you
think it is smart to do jumps in the lap of mother nature. If neophytes can
be discouraged from mountain biking by the kind of articles that Mr.
Vandeman posts, then so much the better.

all you two pathetic souls can do is muck up a google group. you have
not now nor will ever sway or discourage anyone - neophyte or other -
from taking up this sport and practicing it as they choose. you are
only two. years ago it was only MV, now he has ED with him - i guess
you can say your side has doubled in membership! LOL!!! you have zip
- zero - nada influence. you have pretty much ruined this site and
there is precious little real backcountry info here (i am a
backcountry hiker/camper as well as a mountain biker and surfer)
because you two stink up the place so much, but that is the extent of
it all. we all still bike offroad and more are taking up this growing
sport behind us. sucks to be you.

and all the while at least there are other groups where we can discuss
our sports and the likes of you arent around, so we just keep growing
over there. kinda like fighting auto dependency - the wondrous results
of which you never seem to share with us - you are just a hamster
spinning his wheel.......

enjoy your day on the couch.

That's what mountain bikers say whenever someone tells the truth about
their selfish, disgusting sport. They can't STAND to hear the truth.

You are engaged in both mountain biking and hiking! How is that possible?
The two activities are diametrically opposed to one another. You have got to
be one screwed up *******!

Maybe because to the average person they're just recreational
activities, and one can enjoy both equally. Regardles, I'm done with
this crap. I'm going riding, on a multipurpose trail, and I'm sure as
hell not going to go slow.

no wonder you cant understand, i am not the least bit surprised. as
hard as it is for you to comprehend, i actually support mountain
biking where it is allowed and support no mountain biking where it is
not allowed - such as national parks. therefore you see i am the
perfectly evolved nature conservationist - i can support and practice
both activities where they are appropriate. its classic yin and yang
- the perfect balance. balance is something your mind can not
comprehend, for your mind exhibits classic "unbalanceness". you would
be scary if you actually had a brain and were half-way physically fit.

I don't want any mountain biking on any hiking trail no matter where such a
trail is located. If land managers had half a brain they would know that the
two modes of recreation are incompatible with one another. That is something
you would know too if you weren't such a jackass.

Yes, by all means, go fast, hit an obstacle, go over the handle bars and
break your ****ing neck. Then lie around for the rest of your life,
paralyzed from the neck down. Well, that is mountain biking for you -
healthy to the bitter end!

Good analogy. Yeah, that probably would appeal to a mountain biker,
due to the same adrenaline "fix".

You are right, I will never understand how risking my health and well-
being for a cheap thrill is worthwhile. MOST normal people feel the
same way. Being addicted to adrenaline is obviously a genetic defect,
NOT something to celebrate! Moron.

cheap thrill? hardly - the skill required to achieve the level to
experience that thrill comes at a hefty price of years of training.
and you are right - "normal" people dont and never will understand, i
much prefer being abnormal and living life for the fun experience. how
pathetic a life you lead. by the way - hows that auto dependency
thing working out for ya?? and what is your phd in anyway?

Breaking bones and risking disability or death isn't "fun", moron. The

illegal -- which it IS, in parks that live up to their mission, such
as Yosemite.
