View Full Version : Compression hose - Achilles tenderness

I've had swelling/edema problems for years and I've recently taken to
wearing compression hose almost all the time when I am not on the
bike, even occasionally when I am sleeping. I've recently noticed
tenderness and stiffness lately in my left achilles up near the calf
muscle.

Right Achilles is ok.

Any one else had an Achilles problem like this?

Yeah I did, it started happening when I was about 50. Severe stiffening (to the
point of being lame) affected the achilles near the calf of both legs and seemed
to be brought on by participation in any any 'impact' sport like beach
volleyball/soccer/jogging. It would last for a couple of days but stay slightly
sore for a week. Now I only do non-impact sports (cycling and windsurfing) and I
haven't had any more trouble with it <touches wood>.

Not exactly similar

But my ankles tend to swell and this seems to be directly related to
both weight and salt consumption combined with age.

RICE whilst of some help is not totally effective these days.

25 mg of hydrochlorothiazide per day might fix you up although it's on
the banned list a la Alexandr Kolobnev (guilty but no suspension due to
extenuating circumstances)

No, but I can see how wearing the compression hose for such extended
periods could help in one area and hurt in another. How about cutting
some small slits in the hose in the problem area to relieve some of
the pressure? You'd probably have to reinforce the cuts so they
wouldn't unravel. Think of them as bound buttonholes. Sewing
machines have such settings and it's truly trivial to do.

Stinging around the tendon, swelling around the joint, stiffness and
pain at limits of movement. This has all been quite minor and been
dragging on for years. Recently been bathing feet and ankles in
natural salt water scrubbing for two minutes each day with feet
submerged. Skin is wonderfully soft and inflamation etc has
dissappeared, in days. The beneficial effects also seem to spread and
my calf muscles at least are softer after a couple of weeks of use.

I've also questioned the value of compression hose. The pressure
increase will tend to reduce fluid build up in the lower extremities
but at the expense of reduced blood flow. That is, artificially
creating vasoconstriction will reduce blood flow in the lower leg
unless blood pressure increases. I was talked into trying them but
didn't like the feel. Ride more was my answer.

Don't look for me to disagree with you! I think you're entirely
right. The compression thing should be done on a very limited basis,
and the riding thing will keep you happier for longer. And it's
cooler. Nobody ever said, "Hey, c'mon over - I want to show you my
new compression socks."

You want Dr. Rico's free homespun advice? No? Too bad! ;)

Get a rocking chair. I'm serious. The gentle rocking is your lower
legs pumping. Pumping muscles and pumping blood flow are the same
thing. The pumping improves strength, is done with no weight on the
legs, and can be done for hours on end while watching TV.

So when you're out riding your bike, you're "off your rocker"?

I like it! Much better than the usual "someone's home, but the porch
light is flickering" that I usually get.
