Job #1 is getting rid of the sprinters as far from the finish line as
is possible, in the first place. (Bye bye, Cavendish!)

Look at "Last 7 km".

Nibali initiated, with Gerrans the only one on his wheel, and right on
it, too. Cancellara bridged up. Both Gerrans and Nibali did at least
some work (maybe not much, but some) on the way to the line.

"It's a bike race" and the job at hand is to win it. Full props to
Nibali and Gerrans for descending with Cancellara (Gerrans giving a
little cushion and still not dropped), and playing their cards so that
one of them would have a chance to win against Cancellara.
Said as a fan of Cancellera. In the past, he's been able to drop other
riders win; maybe he's lost a little of that, plus other racers know,
beyond a shadow of a doubt, that when Spartacus goes, they have
limited options to pursue if they want to win, or podium, etc.
