Cyclist crashes into another cyclist
A FREAK collision between cyclists late at night outside Pennal left one of
them lying motionless in the road where he was hit by a car and died, an
inquest has heard.
Leigh Hills, 41, from Surrey, had drunk the equivalent of three pints at the
Riverside Hotel, near Pennal in July last year before setting off along the
A493 on his bicycle towards Aberdyfi.
Coroner Dewi Pritchard-Jones said at Caernarfon: "Mr Hills was going home
from the pub in an entirely normal way. "Whether he was riding or pushing
his bike the evidence doesn't show. "But for him it was an ordinary evening.
"The odds of this happening must be very remote. There was a collision
between two cyclists and in such a rural area the odds of that happening
must be enormous."
Mr Pritchard-Jones said if he had been riding his bike he would have been on
the wrong side of the road.
But if he had been pushing it then he was, correctly, facing the oncoming
traffic.
However, there were no street lights where the tragedy occurred and he
wouldn't have been seen easily.
Unluckily for him the other cyclist had also been out and going home and
turned from a minor road on to the main road. "There was then some sort of
collision," the coroner remarked.
The survivor couldn't recall details. There was no sign of life when a
couple arrived at the scene in their car. Mr Hills was in the road.
After the mystery collision between them, both cyclists had fallen on to the
hard surface of the road and had been motionless.
Perhaps with proper lights they would have seen each other, the drink would
probably not have helped either.
