Let's hope the lady makes a full recovery.

I'm sure we're all glad to hear that the elderly man had only minor
injuries.

What?? How can this have happened??? Only cyclists mount their vehicles
on the pavement!! Just ask the psychopath trolls....

Of course the elderly victim emerged from being mown down with just a bruised shin. Oh hang on, she is fighting for her life in intensive care.

Just as well she wasn't hit by a bicycle, then, eh? According to our
trolling spastics here, the kinetic energy differential is irrelevant, and
cyclists are 'just as likely to injure or kill'.

She's probably have been atomized if hit by a bicycle. Damned dangerous,
those things.

Let's hope that when you and Yitzhak get to 88, you are each no more
subject to mistake and error - and/or being taken suddenly ill - than
the gentleman mentioned in the news story.

They're probably going to conclude he had a medical event and not press
charges, rather than prosecute him for hanging on to his driving license
well past its use-by date. I mentioned a petition addressing this
hazard a while ago:

Indeed - in this case, a 86 year old man, had an "episode", crashed and was burned alive which was OBVIOUSLY the fault of the road and "something" must be done.

A modern bypass is built to penny-pinching 1920-style single-carriageway
standard (even though enough tax is collected to build to proper dual
carriageway standard many times over).

What could possibly go wrong?

I doubt it. His car reportedly did catch fire, but the picture doesn't
show significant fire damage. It's not easy to tell what happened from
the picture, but I'd guess that the car failed to make the bend and hit
the truck head on.

Blaming the road for poor driving is rather pointless, disruptive and
expensive.

As a general principle, that is right. It is, however, possible to blame
poor highway engineering for increasing the possibility (or probability)
of collisions.

If that were not so, we would not have the phenomenon of "road
improvements" which often restrict the capacity of a highway. But we do
have that.

Building a modern bypass (such as the Beverley bypass) to
single-carriageway at-grade engineering standards is an affront to
travellers and businesses.

Incidentally, see:

<http://www.hulldailymail.co.uk/Thousands-drivers-avoiding-new-Beverley-bypass/story-26310119-detail/story.html>

And (on the subject of the road being inadequate and therefore dangerous):

The lady he struck has now died and so it will become a very serious case.

The crash, which involved a red Toyota Yaris and the HGV, happened between Jock's Lodge and Killingwoldgraves roundabout and was discovered by a passing police officer.
=====/Quote=====

It is lucky that passing police officers are so observant. Without their skills of observation this crash may have gone undiscovered.
