Up until now, I've always brought my general basic parts at the local
bike shop, and specialised gear at a shop that specialised in them(when
it existed) or made accessories myself.

I've recently been trying to buy some 27x1.25" tubes and tyres.
Apparently these are dodo material as none of the local shops had any.
Well I did get to 27x1.75" tubes, or so the label said, but they look
like 26" to me,

I also had nil luck web searching for a number of things and came away
totally unimpressed on the range not carried. The situation seems to be
the same for PC parts, those great list are just many shops flogging the
same narrow range from a few suppliers.

So, I'm wondering if it is time to just bite the bullet and go direct to
the manufacturer through alibaba/alliexpress.

hop onto https://www.bicycles.net.au/ forums and chat to the guys in
the retro bike forum. They are mostly into fancy old stuff not
average old stuff but things like odd sized tyres they know all about.
