Mieke Evans, from London, completed an epic challenge to go an entire
year without using any form of transport other than her bike. That’s 365
days with no buses, Ubers, tubes, trains, planes or boats. Well, almost.

She does admit that she had to fly to attend a friend’s wedding in
Carcassonne, France, because she didn’t have enough annual leave to get
there by bike – but she cycled to and from Stanstead Airport. Other than
that, Mieke’s every movement was powered by her own legs. And she says
the challenge not only overhauled her mindset about life but also
improved her health and saved her a tonne of money.

She predicts that by going almost an entire year spending no money on
motorised transport she saved between £2,000 and £2,500. So it was good
news for the planet and her bank balance.

2k on depreciation at least (assuming a modern car) When calculating it
is a fair guide that it will lose 10 percent a year over ten years.
Plus the cost of its finance or loss of interest. plus deneral running
costs. When you point out all of this to people they generally put
their hands over their ears.

If like me you run old cars and maintain them yourself the calcs are
very different. One of mine has gained 30k in value over the last ten
years and has had zero additional costs. The others have lost nothing
except running costs.

Sounds about right. I have a 09 Ford Focus auto bought for 7K in 2012, I estimate it's trade in value at £0 but it should be good for another 5 years at least. Cars are domestic appliances as far as I am concerned.

Good for you, I leave it to the professionals. If it's easy to fix it will be cheap, if it is complicated I couldn't fix it myself.

In what way did her abstinence from using public transport or various
forms of taxis and quasi-taxis save even a drop of fuel?

Have a little think before you attempt an answer.

PS: How does one predict the past?

To most people it's less than they are prepared to spend on transport in
order to simplify and enhance their lives.

And that is the to-the-point question.

£2,000 to £2500 a year will probably be pretty close to the annual
average spend on fuel alone for an average 12,000 a year driver.

You don't identify the question in question, but neither of them
(whether "Wow, is that all? or "Are you a millionaire?") was aimed at me.

Neither does the answer to either of them (assuming I were prepared to
give an answer to the second) affect the truth of my contribution above.

To be clear: to most people of average income or above in the UK, £2,000
to £2,500 per annum is less than or equal to the amount they are
prepared to spend annually on transport in order to simplify and enhance
the their lives and that/those of their families.

That was just on fuel - not tyres/brakes etc.
