QUOTE:
A robber who threatened to kill a shopkeeper and a cyclist with a Rambo knife has been given an extended prison sentence.

Ricky Rayson carried out the robbery in Bramley Shopping Centre before taking the knife out into the streets of Leeds.

The 38-year-old was told he must serve a custodial period of four years and four months followed by a further three-year licence period.

Prosecutor Andrew Horton said Rayson went to the till in Essential Planet with a hairdryer worth £20 just before 1pm on October 17 last year.

Leeds Crown Court was shown CCTV footage of Rayson suddenly producing a large knife with a serrated edge from his waistband while two female customers were in the store.

He held it above his head, threatening: "Open the till or I will kill you." Rayson made his way behind the counter, trapping the shopkeeper and knocking the till to the floor.

He took £30 from the till and also took two packets of tobacco and a packet of cigarettes. Mr Horton said Rayson left the store and asked a cyclist on a nearby estate if he knew anyone who smoked.

The court was told Rayson suddenly he produced the knife again, threatened to stab the cyclist and repeatedly punched him in the face.

The cyclist rode away from the scene and called police on his mobile phone.

Rayson went into flats in nearby Raynville Grange, Bramley, Leeds, and was seen hitting the knife against a door and windows.

He shouted: "I am going to stab you and your girlfriend."

When officers arrived, Rayson somehow made his way down from a balcony and ran away across the grass, dropping the knife and hairdryer as he went.

He was chased, Tasered and arrested.

The sheath for the knife was found outside the flat door and a packet of tobacco and £20 in cash were found inside the flat.

In his police interview, Rayson said he was drunk when he committed the offences. In a statement, the shopkeeper said he has never been as scared in his life and now never works in the shop alone.

In a statement, the assault victim said he thought the defendant was capable of carrying out the threat to kill.

Rayson, of no fixed abode, pleaded guilty to possession of an article with a blade or point, making threats with a bladed article, robbery, battery and making threats to kill.

He has 15 previous convictions for 29 offences, including robbery. Sean Smith, mitigating, said his client is mortified by his behaviour and wishes to apologise to his victims.

HERE COMES THE WRIGGLE - SM Mr Smith said Rayson had a difficult upbringing and suffers from a number of conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder and autism.

Sentencing, Judge Mushtaq Khokhar said: "Whenever one has a knife in hand, anything can happen."
