I have a KH saddle, which is nice and comfy for several minutes at a
time, but once you've ridden for over half an hour without a break it
starts to ache a bit. However... *padded* cycling shorts make all the
difference. I don't see much advantage with wearing a skinny bit of
lycra*, but ones with the extra padding seem to get that bit cushier.
Stick them under something else without big seams and you're sorted, and
no one need know you are wearing lycra. :)

Once you start going for the longer rides, plan on padded bike shorts,
AND an air seat, AND standing up slightly on the pedals occasionally,
AND taking breaks.

Circulation is always good (for guys, gals, and even for frogs).

All my distance unis have air seats. (One has a pig horn. But that's
another story.)

Keep up the good work.

I rode little more than 25 miles during weekend. 15 miles sunday. I only
stopped to drink. It was mostly a single track. No bikes allowed :).
Somehow none of the people told me to go ride somewhere else. After that
I rode around the same lake on a wider track mainly for skiing. There
was a runner who passed me at about the first quarter of the track, so I
decided to race him. I cought him at the very end of the lap. I had to
ride with a cadence pretty close to 100 rpm whole time. Except for the
uphill parts. Two of them I couldn't even ride up on my 24" with 150mm
cranks. Before this my longest ride was about 6miles.

Bike catalogs sell padded underwear you can wear under most anything and
get the benefit of a chamois. They're a lot cheaper than shorts and
quicker to wash and dry.

Hey Lauren and nikkifrog!!

I know that you were talking about this some time ago...but, on the
subject of girls that uni......

I was keeping this whole idea secretive up until now...BUT:
I am making a unicycling movie which should be the first one in its
class

If you are a girl:

Would you be at all interested in filming with me?...say, at NAUCC 2004
in SLC, Utah? or a MUni weekend? or sending me some footage of you
riding? even if you can't do very EXtreme stuff, i'd still be glad to
welcome you to the movie cast...and it doesn't matter what type of
riding you do, either....

Well, g2g for now...
Laterz!

I find that if I'm wearing my leg armor along with my cycling shorts I
stay relatively warm, even in sub-zero weather. Of course, I'm usually
riding more difficult terrain in sub-zero weather (e.g. through snow
drifts) so I keep my heart rate up.

My longest ride to date was 1.5 kilometers, or 14 laps around the
elementary school parking lot.

I also nailed my first freemounts today (batting about 0.3 by the end of
the session, but I should be 0.95 tommorow after I've had a good sleep).
I lowered my seat an inch and said "I'm not going in until I get at
least one!"

It was rather easy once I weaned myself from the bad habit of hoisting
myself up with my back foot. That worked fine when I was leaning on
something, but made the unicycle rocket backwards while freemounting.

So, modest accomplishments, but despite my risque cycling shorts I'm
quite a bit chuffed!!

(Word has it that lycra, while supremely stylish on a bike, is somehow
indecent on a unicycle, so I wore sweatpants for camouflage.)

Maybe that is a misconception. Rather, I think, word has it that lycra
is somehow indecent for a cyclist, but many bicyclists don't care
while most unicyclists haven't overcome their shame yet.

Are there bicyclists on this list who do wear lycra on their bike and
not on their uni for the reason that it is indecent?

(Oh and congrats on the freemount. I had the same problem as you and
it required months of practice.)
