Hi all,

I just bought a Schwalbe Big Apple 28x2.35 tire and I'm looking for a tube.
What is the size of the tube I should use?

Thanks for your help.

Is a 700c x 28/38 large enough?

No. Figure on about 25 mm per inch and subtract a bit for the casing.
You need something in the 50-60 mm class.

So a 28/38mm is fits a tire from an inch to an inch and a half in
diameter. If you use it it will have to stretch a lot to make contact
with your big tire. At best is will just lose a lot of air through the
thinned out rubber, at worst it will rupture, and no doubt at the worst
time. Murphy rules with this sort of thing.

There are at least 3 suitable tubes available -- Quality, Salsa, and
WTB, all 700x47/52, all with Presta valve. The WTB one has a neat valve
cap.

While I would only use an undersized tubes when I can't get the right
size, they actually work pretty well. I had one on my mountain bike
for years. It finally failed at the base of the valve stem where I
couldn't patch it, but worked great until then.

Hi.

At least in Germany you can get a tube from Schwalbe itself. It's number
19 in their catalog, and a 40/62-622/638.

Unfortunately, Schwalbe North America does not sell it.

I ordered the Big Apple with a 'matching' tube, leaving it to the
retailer to figure out what that meant. I remember I found the tube
somewhat small, but I didn't measure it. However I did weigh it: 213.7
grams. It's been on for about 3 months now without problems. Holds air
fine.

it ok to use an under sized tube but the problem with doing it is the
area around valve stem doesnt over inflate evenly.if you pump up the
tube outside the tyre its easy to see this.

this may show up on the outside of the tyre somtimes leaving a weak
under inflated spot on the wheel.

Although it's awkward to put on you can also use a 26" tube.

- Inflate it without too much pressure
- Push into tyre as enenly as possible
- Work the tyre/tube onto the rim (making sure the tube isn't
pinched)

No it won't.

Well, technically yes, but not enough to be noticed.*

That's because you put much more pressure in the tube than it takes to
inflate it to size. Even when you use an undersized tube withh a low
pressure tire. Sure it looks funny when inflated by itself, but with
tire and rim pressing on it, the tube quickly assumes the proper
shape. The problem is that this does add stress around the valve
area, which will fail after months or years of riding.

Ken

*Unless you find an innertube that's much stiffer than the normal ones
I buy and use it in a low pressure tire. But then, low pressure tires
have stiff sidewalls to prevent pinch flats, so maybe you still
wouldn't notice after all.

I've got a 29er inner tube in mine, it's 700x40-50 or something like
that.

Make sure you put a decent pressure into it (I use 60ish PSI) or else
it's squidgely and wants to turn corners all the time.

Oh and if your rim isn't centred right, or isn't quite true it does
funny things too.

It's quite a fussy tyre, but once you get it right, it's super magic and
totally worth it.

I found the packing my tube came in, and that's the one.

Is there anywhere that I can buy a Schwalbe Big Apple 28x2.35 tire in
the US? Or any other tire of the same diameter? Also what are the
widest 700cc rims I can buy?

I ordered my Big Apple directly from Schwalbe
(http://www.schwalbetires.com). I'm using an Alex Adventurer rim.

There was a "700c rims" thread in r.s.u. in February 2003. Among others,
the Rhyno Lite rim was recommended.
