It would seem it something like that. Its 35+ in France today, and those
wheels would have been getting rather hot all the way down a mountain.

He did seem to land first on the shoulder before hitting his head.

OTOH first time I've seen cyclocross on TV since the 70's.

Armstrong took action to avoid the body. He went left downhill
over the rough ground and rejoined the group of riders who
had been behind him.
In some sports he would have been DQ'd for not completing the
same course as the other riders.

Because of the asphalt melting in these conditions he lost grip en fell.
Result broken wrist, broken elbow and right upper leg. end of the season for
him unfortunately.
Luckily there is Vinokoerov trying to make this tour interesting.

Oh, that'll be a rolled tubular due to the glue melting, was it? Someone
else said a puncture...I didn't see it.

Yes, but he didn't gain advantage with the manouvre and in fact lost places
through no fault of his own.
I feel gutted for Beloki and almightily relieved Armstrong didn't go down as
well.

Armstrong said that he went into the corner too fast, had to brake too
hard and so blew the tire off the rim.

Good to see they're all smiling as per the rules!

PS. If one synchronised swimmer drowns - do they all have to?

Tomorrow Never Dies -- OK, the bike's got a motor but it also has Michelle
Yeoh -- which has to be a big plus!!

Never Say Never Again jas JB on a motorbike too, of course. Though I
readily concur that Michelle Yeoh makes it the poor relation of the one
in TND. That whole escape from Carver HQ while handcuffed together
sequence is as marvellously ridiculous as Bond gets: great stuff!

In some sports, you'd be disqualified straight away for being on a bicycle...

:-) Well yes, not really on if you are supposed to running a marathon.

AIUI he could have been penalised for this (for diverting from the
approved route), but it appears that a sensible decision was taken not
to.

why do they still use tubs?

they said on itv2 coverage that its because the tyre pressure can be higher,
i pumped my clinchers to 140psi the other day, how high can u pump up or
need to pump up a tub?

The rims have a better strength to weight ratio as they are box section.
Tubs traditionally give a better ride at higher pressures, allegedly.
Tubs are ridable when flatted, (but there are limits).
Tubs can still be lighter than clinchers but whether these are durable
enough for rough roads I don't know.

Whatever, James. I did see the rear tyre depart from its rim.

I'd go with that, Arthur. Beloki's crash looked very much like a high
side / tank slapper on a motorbike. Sadly, his protection was a little
less than that worn my motorcyclists.

Judging by the way the tyre rolled, looks as though it was a tubular
that had come unstuck in the heat? Cue tubs vs. clinchers debate....

Really? The UK national championships were televised at least once (on
Beeb One) in the early 90s - no doubt played a not inconsiderable part
in my fascination (shurely 'obsession'? - Ed.[1]) with the discipline!
