Has anyone had any experience of shipping bikes to Europe by Federal
Express or the like? For various reasons, we can't take them with us
so need to ship them separately.

I shipped via Qantas non accompanied baggage ad a friend has twice
shipped via TNT (I think). In both cases the only damage was the cost
(large).

When I left home in 96, I used a private customs agent in Mascot and sent it
as unaccompanied bagage. As my girlfriend and I were going for a while, the
bike was charged as cubic meterage, so I filled my box with all the crap I
didn't want in my panniers. It cost around $200 to send and they were
actually on the same plane as me. This was cheaper than taking them with me.
As I arrived in Holland, another agent got them out for me and charged me
around 45 Guilders per bike. I was happy and then I built the bikes and rode
Western Europe

Good luck
