Just in case anyone was wondering...
I've got back from the doc's today and
basically I'm totally healthy and it was
probably just hypoglycemia from eating
stacks of sweet stuff before I rode.

The only "abnormalities" were low
iron for a man (28, normal is 20-300).
and low plateletes (white blood cells)
which is probably due to an infection
and matched perfectly with what the
doc guessed when I told him I'd had
a cold for 4+ weeks.

So, a little more meat in my diet I
think and I should be schweet! :)

Thanks all!

Hey Hippy,

Iron supplements cost very little but you are right when you say that
you have to be careful. I think the word is moderation. ;o)

Four weeks for a cold sucks. Next time you get a cold, at the very
beginning, get zinc lonzenges. I tried them last year on a cold and the
cold was soooooo mild and only lasted about 3 days.

When I said 4 weeks to the doc, he said that it probably
wasn't a cold given that duration. It was more likely an
infection of some kind. This would explain the low
platelete count in my blood tests.
I might try those zinc tabs next time just to see how they
work - honestly though, I try and avoid buying that stuff.
Sometimes it works and I get over it, other times, I just
end up running myself into the ground. Stubborness is a
gift and also a curse ;-)

Ok, I kow this thread is old and probably dead, but it just reminded me of
something that happened last week. Actually it was two different things
that may be related. I was riding to work on Monday or Tuesday, and
everything was fine until about 6 miles into the ride I suddenly got very
dizzy. It was only for a second, but it was completely disorienting
and really freaked me out. I rode the last mile and a half taking things
very easy and drinking more water than I usually would. Once I got to work
everything was fine and Had no problems the rest of the day. On Wednesday
night (I work nights, BTW) I was at work and everything was fine until
about 9:30 pm when I suddenly got very tired and had trouble concentrating.
Several times I started working on one of the many things I do and would
get sidetracked and completely forget about it only to return later and be
completely surprised that it was not finished. Anyway, I left the Boss a
note saying I thought I was coming down with the cold that has been going
around and may not be in the next day. He called the next day to say they
had everything in hand and that I could take the day off. I have felt
perfectly fine ever since then.

Anyway, to get to the point... Do you think these things could be related.
I do have part of a Mountain Dew most days before riding to work (It's been
too hot for coffee). I've also been having waffles this last week with lots
of syrup on them. Could this be a sugar related thing?

In my situation I'm pretty sure it was sugar-related. But as everyone
else said - get checked out by a doctor if symptoms persist, etc..

I would not drink the mountain dew before a ride. "Usually" I
don't have sugary foods prior to a ride - only during and after
and only if they are particularly long or strenuous.

For my 1 hour-ish commutes morning and night I only drink
water anyway and I'm fine. It's only longer rides that I take
food. Actually, I don't even use sports drinks on my 100k+
weekend rides. Sometimes I have a gatorade after the long
rides, sometimes not.
In summer, 40degC+, I may drink more sports drinks but
water usually does me pretty well.

Try some less sweet foods and see if you notice a change.

It could be sugar related as you guessed.

It may also be caffeine related. For some people, Minear's Disease seems
to be affected by caffeine. BTW, decongestants and dairy products have
also been linked to vertigo attacks like this.

If spells like this persist you should see an ear, nose and throat
specialist to check for middle ear problems like Minear's.
