Hey all,
after xpedia sent me a set of scratched 105 sti's which got sent back in
a strop they contacted me today saying that I could have a pair of brand
new Ultegra ones for £105. Not flight deck compatible but then who uses
flight deck anyway?

I think this is a phenomenal price and just wanted to share it!

Slightly related - did you get your bar ends working? What are you going to
do with them when you get the STIs?

cheers,

Good question. The bar end for the front is absolutely fine, but I can't
get the right one working at all. I suppose it could be used as a
friction shifter by somebody running a 6 or 7 speed. I'll probably whack
them up on ebay as separate items and see what I can get. If anybody
wants em make me an offer.

Fifteen quid for the pair, seeing as how one's knackered and they're 40 quid
new?

If you add cables and cable-stops (if you need them), this appears a
less tempting deal. I reckon about 20quid for cables, and who knows
what for Shimano down-tube cable stops. Plus can these new-old-stock
levers work with a triple?

For £20 I would expect the cables to be gold plated! I already have
outers from the old shifters they are replacing which can be trimmed to
size. Replacing bar-end shifters so already have cable stops. I have
checked about triple and they will be fine. They just don't have flight
deck. Even second hand these shifters go for around £80 so i think £105
brand new is a good price.

And the answer is a broken spring - a big one inside it lost its end, which
meant it wouldn't go very far. Ie it's a writeoff. Well, I've learnt a) what
the insides of a bar end shifter look like, b) how not to take one apart (I
think it may be possible to do non-destructively) and c) a failure mode.

I'll keep the lever bit as a spare in case I snap one (unfortunately the
snapped one we have is on the LHS) - and then be a bit more careful taking
it apart!

cheers,
clive
