Hurrah for you!

I'm putting off going to see the doctor about my painful knees because I'm
worried he'll tell me to stop cycling. I think I'll just keep on going until
something actually breaks and let them fix it then (plastic knees are quite
good these days, aren't they?) - I figure by that stage I won't even want to
be on my bike.

Pardon me for butting in but if you actually mean that then you are
just being silly; a visit to the doc, ten days no cycling as opposed
to taking an ostrich stance and refusing to see any problem leading
to never being able to cycle again.
Of course you could be kidding in which case you got me.

Yeah, sorry - just being flippant. I do need to get my knees looked at, and
I am bothered that it might mean a rest from cycling for a short while, but
I'm not really daft enough to leave it.

I was in a similar situation a few months ago after a colon resection. I
had several false starts before I was really back on the bike. I'd ride
one day, feel good about it, but then feel tired the next day and not
ride. Now I've been commuting by bicycle steadily for three weeks and
riding increasing distances on weekends. Maybe age played a role in my
case, but I just thought I'd let you know that if you don't feel as good
about biking today as you did yesterday, just wait a little longer and try
again. It takes time to bounce back from abdominal surgery.

Tangential to this; how good are your doctors' surgeries at providing
bike parking? The waiting room at my local docs is plastered with
posters telling us to get more exercise but it would appear that they
don't actually want you turn up on a bike.

Same story at the hospital. As far as I could tell from a string of
visits, South Hampshire's biggest hospital has a total of *3*
sheffield stands. Not under cover or anything, of course.

South Hampshire's biggest hospital has some very good signs to which you
can lock your bike though...
