I have some small splits in the tire in the treaded part that would
be against the ground in a hard turn. They're short (longest is 1/4")
and parallel with the bead. It's just one little group, not distributed
around the tire.
Is this cosmetic, or something that will try to kill me at the worst
possible time?

It's cosmetic, and probably a symptom of an older tire. It's the
casing fabric of the tire that holds it together, not the rubber.

It's cosmetic, and probably a symptom of an older tire. It's the
