All of a sudden I am seeing everyone with Paul's components. What's all
the hype with Paul's shifters and other components?

I thought the hype was the total lack of hype.

Shaun aRe - I got heaps of Shaun's components I have. "They're really
great."

High School: "I have braces and you don't"

couple years' back MTB: "I have XTR and you don't"

now: "Everyone has XTR; I have to be different and use something else. I
have Paul's and you don't"

Bottom line: Wow, you wasted your money. Maybe not about the braces but...

Paul SS WORD hubs suck.

Actually it is Paul Components. Just like Cook Bros. Racing was not
"Cook's."

Small hands on manufacturing. It is really more of a revival than
anything else. In 1994 Paul Components really hit the big time with
their stoplight canti's, original Love levers, Crosstop(Not so)long
pulls, and prototype Powerglide rear derailleur. Paul Price was at the
heart of a "Boutique Bicylce" boom in Chico. At the time, Jeff lindsay
was still building Mountain Goat frames, Cool Tool was just getting
geared up, and Paul Price was fab'ing the chi'chi parts to hang on the
bikes painted by Air Arts.

Now, after a decade, Paul Price's work is being rediscovered. Perhaps
he has really hung on long enough. Cool Tool was bought by Gerber ...
production sent to TIA and in no time the company was out of business.
Jeff Lindsay expanded his operation ... got screwed by VooDoo/Titec and
others and called it quits (he now make "Precision Tools for the Glass
Artist." Paul Components expanded their line to include hubs, Front and
Rear Derailleurs(a completely servicable derailleur set, Shift levers
(not just thumbies mounts), and one of the first dedicated one-speed
hubs. Just like White Industries, a littel farther south, the company
fell on hard times, production dropped, a lot of folks lost their jobs,
ut somehow the company hung on. And just like White, Paul has been
rediscovered for what they were originally known for, highend,
handbuilt, one-off, boutique bike, chi chi parts.

I didn't know Paul made a non SS WORD

FWIW The second generation WORD hubs suck. The WORD hubs for ~1997 were
excellent.

They don't, but I added "SS" so the gearheads would know
what I was talking about.

How did they differ from the current offering?
I will give them credit for customer service though.

They differ from the shell to the bearing preload to the finish. The
main difference (other than looking different) is that the one wrench
bearing preload doesn't back off, so you don't have a loose/rattling
hub every other ride. I have a first year production hub that I clean
and adjust once a year. On the other hand I have a WORD from two years
ago that I have to adjust every ride.
