It looks like cyclists should benefit from this canal restoration project:
"The people of Felpersham received some long-awaited good news this
morning, with the announcement that the Heritage Lottery Fund will grant
£5 million towards the restoration of the tranquil Felpersham Canal.
Currently, the Felpersham Canal has little access for narrowboats or
cyclists, although walkers can explore the length of the towpath and
boats do operate on the northern end of the canal.
It is expected that the restoration, estimated to cost a total of £7.5
million, will generate an additional £2.5 million per year throughout
the wider county of Borsetshire.
The Felpersham Canal is already an established tourist attraction, with
walkers, sightseers and nature lovers particularly fond of the unspoilt
rural waterway. The Mercer Aqueduct in Felpersham itself is a feat of
19th Century engineering, and east of the city, the Felpersham Canal
boasts the largest colony of water voles in Britain.
When restoration is complete, it is hoped that the Felpersham Canal will
become a centre for water sports including wakeboarding."
