I'll make it easy for you, and take that RAMROD ticket right off your hands.
Then you don't have to worry about buying that bike, much less training for
it.

Hi there, I was lucky enough to get a ticket to ride in the RAMROD
(Ride Around Mt Rainier (in) One Day) bicycle ride. But I don't have a
bike! I have 2 months to train for this 150+ mile ride, which is in
paved roads around Mt Rainier.

Any suggestions for a $1,000 - $1,500 bike? I would love to find a
bargain, even if it is somewhat of a hassle to get it.

Thank you very much,

Roger Fox.

Perhaps you are unlucky enough to get that ticket! From what you say
you are not riding at all as you have no bike. Buying a bike for your
price is no problem- just go into a bike shop. But my guess is that
starting at 0 and having only two months to train that unless this ride
is all downhill that you will have a less than pleasant time for the
last 75 miles of your ride.

I've been in the saddle much of my life, and have just bought a
Specialised Roubaix, which is an absolute dream. Riding it over the
last couple of days since purchase have shown it without doubt to be
the best cycle I've ever sat upon.

However, it would not cross my mind to do 150+ mile race in two
months, even if I had every day to train, because I've hardly been
riding anything but a mountain bike, and then only occasionally, for 5
years. Are you saying you don't have _any_ bike? How long haven't
you had one for? How much riding have you ever done?

No kidding, dude... a 150+ mile _race_ will absolutely kill you.
You'll retire half dead and be layed up for weeks.

James.

To put this in perspective, RAMROD is not technically a race, but it
does incorporate about 10,000 feet of climbing. I hope the OP knows
what he is getting into.

After reading all this, maybe I should just return my ticket, I don't
think I can give it away. I have a wedding in Florida to attend on
that day anyway.

Well, if you but a bike now and start riding you can bike to the
wedding and back and then you'll be in shape for your RAMROD next
year~!

hhmmmmmm......so you had planned to go to the wedding before or after
the ride???

why am i getting the nagging feeling that we've been had?!?!?!

I was planning on taking a red-eye to Florida after the bike ride for a
wedding on Friday afternoon.

I have narrowed my choices to a couple of Ti bikes, thanks for the
helpful email responses. I could easily get on a bike tomorrow and
ride 100 miles, so I'm not too worried about being able to complete
this ride.

Seems like this ng was unusually helpfull to you. So, please post where
you get the nifty Ti bikes in your price range (are you getting Dura
Ace or Record components?). I'm sure they would love the referral
business.

And please post back after your ride. We're all pulling for you and
looking forward to the report of your sub 7 hour ride for the 150
miles. That is well within reach if you can do 100 miles easily and
still have two months to train on your new Ti steed.

OH! I'm sorry I forgot to ask.
Is Bill Baka doing this ride with you?

pavement.
