View Full Version : Giant Composite Frame Sizing

June 3rd 05, 07:07 PM
I am 5'8", 145lbs.

The Giant website says that for my height, I am a medium frame. Medium
replaces conventional frame sizes from 51-55cm.

I ride 52 or 53cm bikes normally (according to my inseam measurement).
According to Giant, this would make me a small frame size.

My height puts me at one frame size (med), but my inseam puts me on
another (small).

Giant composite frame owners: How tall are you? What is your inseam?
What frame size do you ride based on these measurements.

Giant's chart is all f'ed up. I need the help of the people!

Thanks.

Don't take this the wrong way. But I think it is your process of
selecting a frame size that is the problem. If you want to get a bike
properly fit then,I believe, you have to do it in person. Trying to get
a good fit off a chart, especially if your body doesn't perfectly fit
the "norm" used for the chart is bound to be problematic.

I have ridden BOTH frame sizes. Both feel good. The smaller one is more
controllable, the larger one is more stable at higher speeds. I need
input from other people, I need to know what others have done. THAT IS
WHY I posted this question here. OF COURSE I am trying the bikes in
person. I want other people to tell me what they have experienced.

So I repeat, Giant owners, how big are you? What frame size do you ride?

Bike sizing should be mostly based on your reach and drop to the handlebars.
Some people are more comfortable with a higher handlebar. Some people prefer
the aerodynamics and power of a lower handlebar. Giant bikes sizes tend to
be sized far enough apart that you can't get the same kind of fit on two
different sizes.

If you've got your mind set on that particular bike, I suggest you find a
decent dealer who can handle the fit issues. People don't come in small,
medium & large sizes. Fitting people to Giant's idea of how things should be
sized often involves compromises and creativity. Find a dealer who knows
them very well and is willing to set one up exactly how they think it ought
to be, based upon your measurements (of which inseam is about the least
important, by the way).

You might check out this article on our website-
www.ChainReaction.com/roadbiketestrides.htm. It will give you an idea of
what to look for, as well as how the bikes should be set up.

I'm slightly over 6'1", and fit their large size well with the factory
stem. I can see the hub behind the bars, but the reach is
comfortable for me, because I have long arms - I felt cramped with a
shorter stem.

For me, Giant frames suck - I returned mine after one day of riding. They
just feel like toys, imo. I'm not sure why.

I'm 5'11", about 78 kilosand ride a medium Giant OCR2. I tried a Trek and
Specialized in the same price range.
I didn't like the specialized and took it back after a quick once around the
block on my test ride. The Trek and Giant were very similar in weight and
performed equally as well but the Giant feels slightly stiffer at the rear
end which has aided my inability to climb all hills without being knackered
at the top.
The Giant also comes with a 9 speed cassette where as the Trek and the
Specialised only have 8.

The Giant also looks better being all black.

hope thus helps

cheers

Oh definitely the Giant has a nice black frame and the 9 speed, which is
why I chose it first...but for some reason I didn't like it. Maybe I had
one size too small? Giant definitely looks better on paper. They even
compare it to a Trek in their advertizing giving a point-by-point 'better
than' descriptor.

It didn't seem that stable to me, but I'm 5'9" and 100kg. Plus it has that
damnable sloping top tube, and that way ugly adjustable stem thing. What
did you pay in USD for the OCR2?

I thought the Trek 1000 was more comparable to the OCR1? er, as to price
range...the OCR2 is better compared to the Trek 1200 isn't it?

I looked at the 03 OCR1...I hear the 05 OCR1 is a little better:

....has a pretty in-depth review.

Again, not to insult your ride in any way, shape or form. It's a good bike,
bro.

I paid £500 which is about $900 dollars at todays rate.

The Giant OCR2(2006), Trek 1000 and Specialised Allez were all the same
price at several local bike shops and online in the UK.

I chose to buy it locally as i wanted to test them out before purchase.
The Giant also has a few Tiagra components where the others were all sora.

cheers
