View Full Version : What to do with a worn out bike

Micheal Artindale
September 28th 05, 12:47 AM
On the weekend, i will be replacing an old wornout bike.

What do I do with the one that i am replacing it with?

.... there are lakes and swamps around that I could "leave it" in.

Thanks,

Micheal

Donate it to Goodwill and get a tax refund.

Bringing it to the local scrap dealer would do better. It would cost too
much for goodwill, or any other charity.

Sell it to a short-distance commuter (or fred, or both) for a $100 or
two, depending on its initial quality. That's what I'm going to do with
my 7-year-old Proflex when I can finally replace it. Already got a buyer.

Go ahead, trash it in nature + pollute the environment. Give more fodder to
idiots like Vanderman.

Or you can sign up on freecycle.org and give it to somebody who needs a
bike.

Don't know where you're located, but something like this would gain you

Don't dump it into a body of water. A bicycle has all sorts grease, oil,
paint, etc. that will pollute the body of water. Donate it to a local
charity or give it to a bike shop and ask if they can do something with it
or give it to someone who can fix it up and use it or leave it leaning
against a wall in the busy part of town (someone will eventually wind up
taking it). Just don't pollute our water more than it already is.

Turn it into a singlespeed.

That would be idiotic because it's littering.

Where are you at, Michael ? In these parts, there are a lot of charitable
organizations looking for bikes for needy homes. You may get a tax receipt,
maybe not.

Better to help somebody out than scrap it. And I trust the "lakes and
swamps" comment was a troll... ;-)

This area's crime is not high enough for that to happen, and the bike is
worthless

I wasnt going to do it, I do actually want to protect the environment, but
not in the egotistical idiotic way

It might make a night support for something green out in the garden.

I'm still trying to figure out how to turn an old RS Judy into a plant
stake.

A few years ago, my then roommates and I had a fridge we needed to get
rid of. I told one of them to place it in the alley behind our garage.
About 4 days went by and nobody took the bait. My roommates asked me,
"Now what?" I told him to slap a big sign on it "For Sale $50" Sure
enough, someone "stole" it that night :-)

Problem solved.

IF its that far gone just take it to a local tip or metal recycler.

Mike, how old are you? What are you looking to get out of this thread? You
knew every single answer to the questions you're asking, and yet you have
learned nothing. That fits a troll definition pretty well. If you're
looking for child's play, go to the online forums.

I am 25, but what does that matter. I am no more of a troll than you are. I
wanted to see what other do with their old bikes. Mine likely will get
stripped, and the bad parts chucked. the usable parts will get put in a box
for when I need to fix my bike, or someone elses.

I see the source of your frustration but these groups are really for
discussion of the subject of mountain bikes. Discussion is best started
by asking questions. Sure, it may not stretch your mind ;) At least its
not some political rant or such OT rubbish. Consider it 'thought out
loud' instead of a 'question that has one perfect solution'.
