View Full Version : Annother annoying clueless newbie!

October 14th 05, 12:19 AM
Hi guys, first of all please let me apologise for asking a question you
guys probably get a hell of a lot. I have been looking around for a
while now and regardless of how many websites or stores I visit I am no
closer to knowing exactly what I'm after. So basically I thought I
would see if I could get some impartial advice from you guys. I have
managed to narrow my choices down to 4 bikes with seemingly similar
specs & prices (in Australia anyway) which are:

06 Giant Yukon
06 Jamis Durango
06 GT Avalanche 2.0 Disc
06 Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc

I was wondering if anybody in here could offer any info or advice on
any of these bikes, does anything stand out above the rest? As a
newcomer I could look at these 4 all day and not be able to pick a
winner on anything other than aesthetics!
Anyway, any advice you guys could offer me would be greatly
appreciated!

Which color do you like best...seriously.
Also, if they come from different shops pick the one you like best.
BTW, no inpartial advice on AM-B. E.g I don't like GT or Jamis (just
don't, so there!). The SpecialEd Hardrock SS I looked at at my LBS is a
brick, so I'd say pick the Giant. But what do I know. Pick the best color.

Sounds like you've got your eyes peeled on some nice bikes. Might want to
check out mtbr.com for great reviews and knowledgeable advise from serious
riders. Good luck and post some pics when you get one!

you are joking, right? MTBR reviews are a great place to read about 3 year
old parts, and "the bike rewls" posts from someone who has owned one of
something for a month.

Good input is to be had from people who post about their experiences in a
coherent manner. And longer time frames.

you think? The only useful info I've ever gotten off the reviews there is
chainsuck confirmation for Treks and GF bikes.

Yeah, mtbr is full of "serious" riders. I especially enjoy the reviews
of a-technical singletracks that some of those "serious" riders say
"can't be ridden without body armor". Seriously lame and barely
coherent wiull never help much of anyone, especially a newb who does
not know better. How can one sift through the BS when they have no
idea what may or may not be BS?

This is very true. You should read some of the trail reviews for South
Jersey. Calling anything within 80 miles of where I live technical
(with the exception of certain spots in Wissahickon) is grounds for
commitment to a mental institution. Those who write a technical review
for South Jersey have no business being on a bicycle.

I'll go along with Shawn. The GTs and Jamis' don't float my boat. The
Hardrocks I've seen recently seem to be 'built' when they don't need to
be, so I'd go for the Giant. Having said all of that, try them out, see
what feels comfortable. And don't get too hung up on gimmicks and
components, they can always be changed later.

KUDOS to you

October 16th 05, 11:16 PM
Thanks very much for the advice guys, I suspected that it would pretty
much come down to choosing the bike that felt and looked the best as
there wasnt much between them as far as components go.
So, at the end of the day I went for the Giant and I'm very happy with
it! All I need to do now is reach a level of fitness that will allow me
to use it successfully, it has been many, many years!

Now I just have to figure out what Sepo is, must be some sort of deragotory
Brit-speak for something American, hmmm, ruminate, some etymological
relationship to sepoy? I give up...

I suspect rhyming slang. Yank rhymes with tank, as in septic tank, and
Sepo is an abbreviation for that. Basically it means 'mericans. How'd I do?

According to Google: www.jannagraber.com/new_page_20.htm you did just
fine. :)

Still, I don't like that septic tank reference. That's not nice at all.
Besides, I have township sewer lines to my house.

much adoration, respect and affection, or at least how ever it pleases to be
treated. The End.
