I noticed how he ran away carrying his "viable means of transport", and he
did not seem to be enjoying this very welcome attention.

It seems very clear that the admiration was unwelcome. On this point

Seems a lot of bicyclists are despised.
But it is not universal. Many seem not to despise bicyclists.
