"Troll" Now Officially Means "Anti-Speed Camera Poster"
From now on, the word "troll" is officially defined as "anti-speed
camera poster" within uk.rec.cycling. This is to bring the official definition into line with the unofficial definition which has been used for quite some time by uk.rec.cycling subscribers and regulars. Over the last year, there have been numerous examples of: - non-trolling anti-speed camera posters (e.g. JNugent, Matt B, Nuxx Bar) being called "trolls" by regulars; - trolling pro-speed camera posters (e.g. Guy J Chapman, "_", Peter Clinch) not being called "trolls" by regulars. Furthermore, a recent thread was started which invited regulars to name a single anti-speed camera poster who hadn't been called a "troll". Also, another recent thread asked posters to explain exactly how the likes of JNugent and Matt B fit the usual definition of "troll". In neither case could the regulars come up with anything. Despite the fact that this new definition of the word "troll" is clearly inaccurate, the word is now used so prolifically in this sense that it would not be practical to require posters to cease doing so. Therefore, the new definition will immediately come into effect officially, and should also be applied unofficially if reading posts from the last year and beyond (with decreasing frequency as one goes back in time). This, of course, leaves us unable to use "troll" in the usual sense, so a new word is needed which will do this job instead. However, there seems little point in attempting to prescribe such a term at this stage, so we will see how actual trolls such as Guy J Chapman, Spindrift and Jonathan Hills are referred to by their opponents from now on in the light of the above new definition. A further administrator message will then be issued when the new term for "troll" in the usual sense has been officially defined. Cheers and thanks, Administrator -- BY ORDER OF ADMINISTRATOR UK.REC.CYCLING |
