Cyclists who kill or seriously hurt pedestrians could be prosecuted like
dangerous drivers under new laws being considered by the government.

Drivers convicted of death by dangerous driving face up to 14 years in jail.

But there is currently no law against causing death by dangerous
cycling, with most cases of careless cycling being dealt with by fines.

I thought the law of manslaughter or causing grievous bodily harm should
cover those situations.
The maximum penalty for manslaughter is life in jail.

Many of us thought that the law covering DWDCAA would (or at least,
could) cover hand-held phone use, but parliament thought it better to
have a particular and specific law against that.

The question you have to ask yourself is how many cyclists are getting
away with quite egregious anti-social offences because the available
punishments are not sufficient (in the mind of the police officer) to
justify the paperwork.

Have a nice, easy, cycling-specific, offence (preferable with a nice
tidy right of arrest, with questions asked afterwards) and that problem
is diminished.
