Cyclist seriously injured in suspected hit-and-run

A cyclist has been seriously injured in a suspected hit-and-run in the Black Country. The 28-year-old male cyclist was hit on Spon Lane South in Smethwick just after 4.30pm on Thursday and taken to hospital with leg, pelvis and spine injuries.

A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop a short distance from the scene and remains in custody.

Officers cordoned off the road, which goes under the M5, late into the evening and a blue car was recovered from the scene.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: "We’re investigating after a car hit a cyclist on Spon Lane South, Smethwick, just after 4.30pm yesterday.

"A 28-year-old man was taken to hospital in a serious condition, where he remains today with injuries to his leg, pelvis and spine.

"A 35-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop a short distance from the scene and remains in police custody."

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent one crew to the scene. A spokeswoman for the service said: "We were called at 4.37pm to reports of a collision involving a car and a cyclist on Spon Lane South. One ambulance attended.

"The cyclist, a man, was given treatment on scene for serious injuries before being taken to Sandwell Hospital for further care."
