Bicycle Seat

Went to the LBS...bought a new seat for my bike. Brought it home,
tried to put it on my bike. Threw it out with garage window and
shattered the glass. Lesson learned....let the person in the LBS put
your bike seat on for you. LEARNING THE HARD WAY!!! Hope everyone
else is enjoying this beautiful Saturday riding their bike. Mine is in
the garage without a seat. Guess I will throw the bike in the trunk,
ride over there and see if he will take pity on me. Where do I get the
idea I have one mechanical bone in my body? I also broke a nail. What
a bitch of a day. "Finally realizes why the LBS is always crowded."
Peace and Stuff

There's your problem right there. You should have gotten a saddle.
Toilets have seats.

Maybe if you threw the bike out the window as well, that would solve the
problem. BG Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

I'm confused. What part of the procedure for changing saddles
involves pulling so hard that it could cause the saddle to go
through a window? I've swapped saddles half a dozen times and
never had to do that.

So it's not a bicycle seat any longer?

It's never quite as simple as that, Maggie. Rumor has it that, in the
mid-60's, Brooks made a hugely popular toilet saddle . . . brass rivets and
all :-)

If it's a Brook's B17 it's at front row seat. Go out and pick it up. Then
buy a SEATpost that fits your bike as well as the seat. The nail will grow
out, and you will be happy with this saddle ... seat.

The picture at the top of the page is captioned:
"The classic Brooks B17 leather saddle; click image for more on Brooks
saddles."

A bicycle saddle doesn't automatically become a seat because it's made
of the same materials as toilet seats.

Sheldon Brown's glossary says:
\==
Saddle
Frequently called a "seat", a bicycle's saddle is not intended to
support the rider's entire weight....

Seat
The chair-like fitting the rider of a recumbent sits on; also a device
for carrying small children on a bicycle. See also "saddle."
==/

I would allow that modern usage permits defining a saddle as the seat
of a bicycle or motorcycle or similar vehicle. Saddle connotes an
activity like riding astride a mount. Seat is more like lawn
furniture.

For a comfortable seat, fly Lufthansa or KLM.
