CO2 Connectors - Threaded vs Unthreaded

A discussion down there --v or up there --^ reminded me CO2 cartridges
come in a least two connectors, threaded and not. I've been caught by this.

Why the difference? Who cam first?

During my mis-spent childhood in the 1950's and 1960's, there were BB
guns that all used non-threaded CO2 bottles. I didn't have one, but I
did collect the spent CO2 cartridges to make small rockets that fit
into aluminum cigar tubes. These had lead plugs and no threads.
During the 1980's, there was a movement to remove lead from products
which resulted in a redesign of the lead plug used on the non-threaded
CO2 cartridges. I also noticed that the threaded bottles were lighter
and available in a variety of sizes. BB guns continued to use
non-threaded cartridges because that's what fits and works best for
fitting into the gun. However, paintball guns used threaded because
they needed larger CO2 cartridges. Drink carbonation devices tended
to use proprietary cartridges and connectors, for obvious (profit
based) reasons.

Disclaimer: I'm not really an expert on the use and abuse of CO2
bottles, just an observer with a potentially faulty memory. You might
ask the same question in a forum or newsgroup for BB and paintball
gun.

Unthreaded CO2 cartridges are meant to be used in those devices that make carbonated water. I haven't seen a bicycle tire inflation tool that uses them. What's more, most of those fillers have a limited lifespan except for https://www.amazon.com/Genuine-Innov...ateway&sr=8-14 The Chinese seem to be making a machined aluminum version but I can't see why.

Years and years ago there was a device consisting of a glass bottle
with an attached CO2 cartridge, called a "siphon" was used to make
carbonated water for mixing drinks.

I believe that the original CO2 cartridges were threadless.

Having a peer about I found

https://www.amazon.com/POWERAXIS-Inf.../dp/B07Q2QDP6P

Which is compatible with both threaded and unthreaded. Good idea imho
as non threaded are cheap and easily available.

Well, I see Amazon list threaded cartridges for 16 oz for $9.19 which
seems pretty all right.
By the way, different cartridges contain different amounts of CO2,
which seems logical. See
http://www.bikepro.com/products/pumps/pumpc02.html
for a chart showing what each size cartridge will inflate which size
tire to what pressure.
Example:
A 12 oz cartridge will inflate a 700-25c tire to 87 psi and a 700-28c
tire to 84 psi. A 16 ox cartridge will inflate a 700-28c tire to
105psi, and a 700-32c tire to 90 psi

That's grams, not ounces.

And it's a pretty horrendous misuse of resources just to avoid pumping.

Try pumping oh say a 700-25C tire to 90 psi with one of those little
short pocket sized pumps :-)

Framefit pumps still work, quickly, zefal hpx, just because worse
solutions have been invented doesn't mean you have to switch to them.
