Mountain biker dies at hospital after collapsing during race in Suamico

Sunday, August 26, 2012 5:32 p.m. CDT

SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ) - A 38-year-old man from Manitowoc collapsed and later died during a mountain biking competition Sunday.

The man was a participant in the Reforestation Ramble Cross-Country Mountain Bike Race in Suamico.

The Brown County Sheriff’s Department did not immediately release the man name until family could be notified.

Around 12:30 p.m. the biker collapsed after stopping at a first-aid station along the route.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The race involved more than 600 competitors from kids to adults.

ASPEN, Colo. -- One person was killed and another injured after a fall
on Hagerman Peak.
The Pitkin County Sheriff's Office said it was called to Hagerman Peak,
in the Maroon Bells Wilderness Area, around 2:50 p.m. Saturday, on a
report of a rockslide that injured two hikers.
The pair were part of a group of five who were ascending the mountain
when the rock slide occurred.

When rescuers arrived, they discovered the person who suffered a serious
chest injury was deceased. Crews rescued the second hiker, who
reportedly suffered from an ankle injury.
A National Guard helicopter was used to rescue the injured hiker. The
Gunnison County Coroner will lead the recovery mission on the body. It
is expected to happen Sunday.
Taking part in the rescue were Western State College Search and Rescue,
Crested Butte Search and Rescue and Mountain Rescue Aspen.
Hagerman Peak is a subpeak next to Snowmass Mountain, which is a
fourteener.

In June 2010, Michael J. Vandeman was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon against a mountain biker.
