"A pilot scheme of the e-bicycles involved 500 local youngsters, last year, and showed overweight children struggled to ride up hills using traditional bicycles."

No kidding. That's an excellent reason to get those children onto pedal powered bicycles and exercise.

"Conwy Council was asked to match-fund £5,000 already provided by the Youth Cycling Project - an external source - for five e-bikes, after the pilot scheme with a local school.

If the bid is successful, the money will be provided by European funding, who've already given £8.3million to projects across the Conwy region since 2000."

Sounds like an ongoing project. I wonder how much it'll cost before it ends?

"The council is already under fire for committing £58million of taxpayers' money on rent for its brand new headquarters in Colwyn Bay over the next 40 years.

While at the same time the local authority has cut bin collections to just once a month.

Sounds like a typical bureaucracy that's out of touch with what the people want/need.

Cheers

Dog I love the Daily Mail comments section!

"Why is the guy in the video placing blame for fat kids upon the most
economically deprived parents? They're not too stupid to cook, nor are
they deliberately fattening up their little piglets for market. The
plain truth of it is that junk food is cheaper than healthy food, and it
has a much longer life span in the kitchen. The cost of meat, even
ground/minced beef, is insane, and the cost of milk, fresh veg, and
fruit can be quite high, too. When you've got kids to feed, pantry's
almost bare, it's 3 days till payday, and all you've got is a tenner,
you're not apt to spend that on salad fixings since it won't provide
that many meals. You're going to toss in your trolley the cheapest milk,
cereal, boxed mac and cheese, pasta, jar sauce, fish fingers, frozen
pizza, and hope like hell you haven't overspent because you literally
have no more money. THAT'S why poor people are fat".

Yes. The most calorie dense foods are usually the cheapest. A generic 2 liter bottle of soda pop costs 94 cents or so at my grocery store. About 900-1000 calories for one dollar. Kraft Mac&Cheese has about 560 calories in one box. And its about $1.50. I have a bog of Fritos potato chips that cost $2. It has 1440 calories in the bag. Bad, cheap food is calorie dense.. I don't have any grape jelly but I would guess it has lots of calories and is cheap. Generic white bread is cheap and high calorie too.

Well, you're right but merely buying less of it would leave
you with enough calories for the day and more pennies toward
the next dope run or bitcoin in the retirement fund or what
have you, right?

Way back in the olden times when I was in grade school, in the
mountains of New Hampshire, we discovered a method of getting up steep
hills... get off and push :-)

It works and doesn't cost 2,000 quid.

cheers,

John B.

It is always a good idea to find other sources for any story in that

In any case, it appears that it is just a request from a youth group and
they haven't actually spent the money.

Any cyclist who within 20 miles of his house is forced to get off the bike and push probably lacks the brains to specify his gears correctly for his topography.

Lower gears would be cheaper and more effective.

Junk food is not "cheaper" than healthy food. The problem is preparation time. When you are working all day it is far more convenient to eat fast food than prepare a meal yourself. And fast foods are usually more attractive because they are high in fats. Fat is NOT unhealthy by itself. The lack of exercise to rid yourself of the calories is the problem.

I'm not so sure that this is a bad idea. To get people used to riding a bicycle and the large difference in the comfort between that and a car could make a large difference. I'm not sure that there's been enough thinking behind this though.

While riding from Sausalito to the Golden Gate Bridge with a friend whom three of us tired out a lot, we were passed by two girls sitting bolt upright and riding right past us on a 7% grade. My friend said, "I hope those are electric bikes" to which the girls said, "Of course". After getting used to riding I'm not sure that a person would want to pay for the expense of an electric bike and wouldn't revert to a standard bike. Father Brown.
