Another pedestrian killed on the pavement

http://thescotsman.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=855032007 indicates
that the little girl killed recently was walking along the pavement
with her mother.

No doubt the driver of the car was actually a cyclist in disguise.
After all motorists never drive on pavements, according to some,
only cyclists do this.

Do you have reason to believe that he was driving on the pavement
intentionally then?

Can you cite even one example of anyone ever suggesting that motorists
*never* end up on pavements /unintentionally/???

I'm amazed they find the time, given all the red lights they have to be
riding through...

Well, it wasn't a collision which bumped him off-course.

It's the elephant in the living room. People really do write letters
to local press about lycra nazi RLJers whilst 140 pedestrians a year
are killed by drivers who deliberately take stupid risks:

Man's fatal crash fine 'a joke'

A van driver who knocked down a young girl as she walked to the shops
with her mother has been fined £1,000.

Demi-Leigh Hitchen, three, suffered fatal injuries when a van mounted
a pavement and clipped her on Livesey Branch Road, Blackburn, last
July.

Two men have been arrested after a sports car ploughed into
pedestrians outside a busy nightclub, killing a bouncer and injuring
five people seriously.

Whereas if he'd taken her from a holiday apartment he would have had the
whole of Europe and the Pope trying to catch him and incarcerate him for
life.

The perp, Ryan Frayne, was also banned for 12 months. Nevertheless, he
was caught driving 8 months later. He pleaded guilty to driving while
disqualified, failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis,
obstructing a police officer, and driving without insurance. He was
given 180 hours of community service and a further 12-month ban. The
reason for the original disqualification was not even mentioned in
court.

But even better than that is the quote from District Judge Peter Ward
who handed out the original sentence for driving without due care and
attention -- "It seems to me that the consequence of your lack of care
is such that I have to impose a significant penalty." As absurd as it
sounds, it was close to the maximum for this offence.

That's the running joke in this family. Whenever husband or I see a motorist
jump a red light, and there are *loads* in our neck of the woods - it's
endemic in Norwich - the saying is, "Look it's another cyclist in disguise."
:-(

Do motorists there overtake queues of stationary traffic waiting at red
lights, specifically to jump the lights?

Do they drive up to a light that has been red for a while, slow down as
they approach it, check to see that the way is clear, then proceed to
jump it?

I suggest that this is off-topic here.

Yes, it's tragic. But pedestrians on the footway are killed in Britain by
drivers every single week, and we cannot discuss every one of them;
furthermore, no-one involved was cycling.
