On 4/21/2011 7:55 PM, kolldata aka Gene Daniels rote:
are stats available for recumbent accident rates or is that meteroite
shower territory ?
like does anyone have personal knowledge ?

I doubt there is enough information to be statically valid.

AFAIK unlike motor vehicles all bicycles are treated as wheeled
pedestrians (pedacyclists is the term) in collision statistics.
Different types of bicycles and tricycles are not differentiated,
indeed bikes and trikes are lumped together. From having spent several
years accumulating reports on bicycle wrecks and from personal
experience riding a recumbent is more likely to be seen and avoided by
an awake, alert, driver because of the WTF factor. Almost all the
wrecks I have that report a recumbent bicycle involved the driver was
either drunk, asleep, otherwise impaired or out to get bicyclists. The
WTF factor only comes in for the driver out to get bicyclists as it
reduces the time between identifying the object as a bicycle and
deciding to hit it to the point that the driver might miss.

Casual observation of some recumbents demonstrates them to be tragic
accidents 100% of the time, whether being ridden or just sitting
stationary.

Looks like a recumbent version of a "Dead Baby Bike".

Barcroft Columbia: http://www.barcroftcycles.com/bikes.html.

Careful observation of some uprights demonstrates them to be tragic
dangers to posterior comfort 100% of the time. :)

Should you wear a helmet while riding a recumbent?

RBT boasts a resident recumbent recliner. You be the judge.
